Missing Cat
His name is James… Was James, God rest his soul. He was seriously the best cat I’ve ever had. From the day I got him and brought him home he didn’t act like other cats and I know because I’ve had other cats before. Quite a few, as a matter of fact, but they’ve all died and gone to be with St. Peter. So I just have James now, and boy is he strange. James pretty much acts like a dog. He walks around with his tongue hanging out and practically barks at the neighbors. He flat-out refuses to use his litter box. Like sometimes I’ll catch him ‘going’ on my clothes or hiding his mess under the rug, but the thing is he just prefers to do his business outside. I know you won’t believe this, but he likes me to leash him and walk him around the neighborhood. I would have turned him into an outside cat, but you know how it is in the city—cats get hit by cars all the time and they don’t have nine lives.

An Unexpected Gift
It started out as any other day had in the springtime in Los Angeles, I was out for a walk with my dogs. We passed by the park, and on toward the ocean, admiring the beautiful flowers of late spring. In general, my dogs are almost as observant as their human mom, always on the look out for something interesting or simply, something out of place. This day we went for a hike at Runyon Canyon. It was busy that day at Runyon, filled with many people and their dogs. Tux and Alex are kindred spirits in many ways; both interested in every sight that they could see on the way up to the top of the canyon. Obviously, hiking to the top to see the Hollywood Sign (as we've done a seemingly a thousand times over) is not of interest to them, as in "dog perspective" it's nothing too thrilling at all. What matters the most to them is taking in invigorating fresh air and walking quickly enjoying the freedom and intrigue of seeing many different sights in nature, and new faces - both human and canine. As they both strutted to the top of the canyon with me, with so much joy and determination (yes they strut on each walk with joy and confidence); observing every single dog and person along the way, both made (albeit most of the time quickly) eye contact seemingly with every single human and their respective pooch.

As in... Camouflage?
Another hour, another state. Me and my family were traveling across country to pick up a new exotic pet from a shelter in Tuttle, Oklahoma. As we rode in my dad’s work Tahoe, I couldn’t stop thinking about the moment that the brand-new animal would enter our lives. We were all looking forward to it, but I knew that my mom was anticipating the moment more than any one of us, including myself. I can still remember the day that we had first set eyes on the wonderful creature. Me and my mom were just sitting down, flipping through the pages of the Wild Life Explorer when we came across an article about the Fennec fox: a beautiful, wild African desert fox. My mother instantly fell in love with the idea of owning one and sought to make her fantasy become reality. So, over the course of the next few months, she had dug up as much research as she could covering the subject. She figured up the feeding costs, planned out the sleeping area, prepared the house to house and accept the new-comer (“fox-proofing”, she called it). She searched for fox breeders within the U.S., and when she came across the “Zoo to You” program and saw that they were willing to sell, she leapt at the opportunity and purchased a little baby fox in Oklahoma. The down side (aside from the absurd cost, that is): we were required to drive there and pick it up. However, this was a simple delay to my mom, and she new that it would be worth it in the end, for she would have in her possession, as she worded it, “The cutest little thing I’ve ever seen!”

The Day I found Him
I was mumbling in my sleep as I did most mornings. I was dreaming about a horse. Another thing I did most mornings but my dream, a good dream was interrupted by someone, my mom most likely but when you're in a dream you don’t always think about the obvious as I'm sure you know. The person was saying my name over and over

Leaving You Behind
Cristina wiped away the beads of sweat rolling down her face. Wearing a hat would have helped keep her cool, but there was no use lamenting it now. Only a few weeds stood between her and well deserved rest. Besides, Anais would be ecstatic to see her garden transformed. With Cristina’s hard work the garden would start to look decent again. With one final tug, her tired hand pulled the last weed from the dry dirt. Right on cue her neighbor’s voice came from the back door that led to the yard.

Napoleon and I
am the soundest sleeper ever, no really…I was married at one time and a tornado warning sounded. My husband attempted to wake me up to no avail, and carried me, asleep to the basement. When I woke up, I was sore and had quite a bruise on my right hip. He told me that he had dropped me getting me to the basement! No, I was not drunk.
