I Am Not A Cat Person
I am not a cat person. I am also not a rodent person, snake person or ferret person. But my daughter is freaking Snow White and animals are drawn to her. She has a knack for fixing broken, abandoned or unwanted animals and finding new homes for them.

Fostering Maple Syrup
I had really enjoyed being a foster mom for the Animal Welfare Association in my area over the course of the past year. I had specialized mostly in bottle feed kittens up until December of 2012. It was so rewarding watching them grow up, helping them to become the great kittens who would find great homes. Then came December of 2012 followed by 2013. It wasn’t an easy year for fostering.

Echo
Over the years, I’ve realized that you never really stop being a soldier. The way I perceive situations, the way I approach challenges differs from how a lifetime civilian would. It can be frustrating, because one path might seem so clear to me, while those around me are intent on a path that is incomprehensible to me.

The Wanderby Whose Name Means "Gift"
Liwu at the Harbor, Fort Bragg, CA 2009 I still remember the day that he came into my world. It was shortly after Hurricane Katrina had forced us to relocate to Baton Rouge, and I was feeling lonelier than I had in a long time. I had been praying and asking for a friend and spending my days in bed, feeling sorry for myself.

Two Tails
Earlier this year my uncle passed away. Talk about a terrible way to start the year. For the sake of identity, let's refer to him as Uncle Steve. Anyway, he passed away in Mexico while he was with his brother, who we'll call Uncle Josue. They both were caring for my grandmother who has been ill ever since my grandfather died a few years ago. His death hurt her so that she has had a literal weak heart ever since. So she has been in and out of hospitals for years, with my two uncles aiding her.

Mack
Mack. That’s the name of the gentlest, kindest, most protective, best behaved dog that ever lived. Mack is the name that a speech delayed three-year-old gave to the puppy that no one wanted, jet black with cigarette burns over his body. Mack is the name of the dog that never bit anyone but looked fierce and was loyal to a fault.

The Station 57 Cat. Third Place in Stray to Stay Challenge. Top Story - April 2021.
There was a “meow” coming from somewhere in front of our station. We heard it at random intervals, desperate but also elusive. Two of the Emergency Medical Technicians I work with helped me canvas the area, using whatever meat products we could find in our break room refrigerator as bait. We are situated in a busy area of Brooklyn and there are many feral cats nearby, but none had ever called out to us before.

My Goldendoodle, Latte
I have a female Goldendoodle, and her name is Latte. It’s incredible the connection you can make with a pet, especially a dog from my experience. I am currently a nursing student and will be graduating soon. My brother who is one year younger than me is in an architecture program. Before me and my brother were able to go to college, it was adopting a Goldendoodle puppy who has severe anxiety, had GI problems, and went to get surgery a year after her adoption that made us get through our challenges. I always wanted a dog when I was a little girl, but my parents would never agree to the idea of having one. Me and my brother were both in high school when I decided to adopt our dog. I felt like I had to so she can save us.
