My Work Buddy - Imja
Work can be a source of extreme stress for many, and when I went into a call center job in the middle of a pandemic, spending over ten hours a day at a desk in my small corner bedroom, with a multitude of medical diagnosis, it definitely became a source of stress for me. If I were left to face it alone, I don't know what I would have done - but, luckily for me, my stress relief came in the form of a bundle of black fur with four paws and a purr that fills you with warmth. Her name is Imja.

Remus
The top of my dog's head, his keppie, has a soft patch of fur between his two floppy velvet ears. When he was an adopted dachshund puppy, he would curl his coffee bean body up in my crisscrossed legs for warmth. I would slowly pet the soft spot on his head, work my finger over the bridge of his nose and back again.

Meet Jayda!
Jayda was born at our local Humane Society in January 1998. Her mom, a purebred Chow Chow, was chained to a pole outside of the facility on Boxing Day a few weeks earlier. Jayda and her five siblings were all adopted the very weekend they were able to leave the shelter. Jayda was the only pup who didn’t look like her mom; she was the tell that her pureblood mom had a secret rendezvous, likely with a shepherd cross.

Not So Grace
As a professional dog nanny as a side hustle, I have come across many dogs that would seem deserving of the EmPawyee of the Month award. Believe me, I have a list of favorites. This isn't about any of those wonderful pups though, instead I am going to take this time to be biased and nominate my dog Grace, or Graciebear as I call her. Hopefully I can convince you as to why you should think so too.

My Frenchie, My Guardian Angel
Chevy small block 350, affectionately called “Chev” or “ Chevy” was more than just a pup. He was a buddy, my friend, a companion, and he encouraged me to get up and get exercised even when it seemed hard or tough. When I would pull in the drive, after a long shift as a nurse, I would see his little black and white face waiting for me. Sometimes it even seemed like he was smiling at me with a cheeky little face and his pronounced underbite.

My Savior
The first time I saw her was an ad on Gumtree of all places. My parents were the ones that said they wanted a dog since the two we had were pretty old boarding the ages of 14 and 16, pretty good for a dog, so if one was to tragically pass the other would still have someone with them. Hopes were already so high that when a month later of promises my mother decides to wait it out for a bit. Could be a few months, could be a few years. I was pretty crushed, I was already in a tough spot with me on the brink of losing my job and all of my friends, I felt like I needed this to keep me grounded. Or just sane.

Mrs Mia Wallace
She was nineteen years old when she finally left this earth. By my side her entire life, and I was forty one at the time of her passing. That meant nearly half my life, I had Mrs Mia Wallace next to me. This was a blessing like no other I have ever experienced in my lifetime thus far. When we first got her, she was so small she could fit in my jacket zipped up. We wondered why we got such a small dog, we were normally ‘Big Dog People’, if you know what I mean. She was my girl, it was my decision to get a dog, we were young and married too young. He didn’t want anything to do with her, that is, until he saw what a bright light she was. Once you saw Mia, you couldn’t ever turn away from her light. This little dog saved my life, more than once, that much is certain.

Paging Dr. Morgan
Have you ever experienced love at first sight? I have. At 18 years old, I fell in love with a coworker immediately after I first laid eyes upon him. He was absolutely beautiful! He was 17 years old when I met him and he swooned me immediately with his gorgeous blue eyes, soft white hair with specks of black in it, and warm personality. He is rather tall and very vocal, always demanding attention in complete contrast to my introverted self who prefers staying in the background. He is Morgan: the coolest cat around.

The Many Jobs of a Cat
If my cat knew that I was writing this, he would likely be giving me one of his ‘Are you serious looks?’ While he is extremely intelligent, some days he just doesn’t understand boundaries or compliments. Therefore, he might see his nomination as something menial that his human is attending to instead of doling out treats. But, as I think about all of the jobs that he attends to in a day, I think he deserves to be empawyee of the month.

(Sleep) Walking My Dog in the Middle of the Night
Like most normal people I have a nightly routine. Around 9 PM I take my dog, Silver, an 11 year old, 111 lb. Silver Labrador Retriever for her last walk of the day. Then I get ready for bed, wash my face, brush my teeth, do all the things that need to be done, and crawl under the covers by 10 PM. I usually scroll for about an hour, then read for another, and finally turn the light off by midnight.
