What Today's World Fails To Understand About Expertise
The Difference Between An Expert And A Sage

When you encounter a challenge that you are not qualified for...
You do what makes most sense...
Find an expert.
But here is a question that many people fail to ask...
What makes an expert qualified?
We seek someone who has expertise...
But do we actually understand what makes that person qualified?
How to ask the right questions?
What the value of their expertise really is?
This is what most people fail to understand about expertise...
Expertise in today's world is generally cheap...
And not all expertise, even high quality expertise, is equal in all situations.
Let me give you an example...
I was speaking with a client recently about their marketing efforts.
They were considering utilizing the skills an expert influencer.
I looked at this particular influencer's information...
And they actually had impressive numbers.
Extremely high levels of views...
Had worked with quality brands before...
Really impressive career that they have built for themselves.
But...
The client I was speaking with had a limited area of serviceability.
With a very specific type of product.
When we began to look at things more closely...
The influencer's reach was global...
Over 60% in countries outside the US...
Which the client would not be able to service.
With the remaining percentage...
That was spread across the US...
With many more places the client would not be able to service.
On top of this...
The influencer, though having worked with high-quality brands...
Were all in completely different industries.
What we were seeing when we looked more closely at everything...
Is that this particular influencer...
Though rightfully called an expert influencer...
Might not be the right type of expert that this client specifically needed at this specific time.
We could look at another industry, however...
Let's take coaching.
We can see today that everyone and their mother calls themselves a coach today...
A life coach...
A health coach...
A business coach...
A leadership coach (where I began my coaching career)...
An executive coach...
And so many more.
But what qualifies someone as a coach?
There is a wide variety of "expertise" within coaching.
From getting board-certified through third-party organizations after going through programs that take years, requiring thesis research to pass, while also getting hands-on experience during training (like I did)...
To other certification programs...
That cost less than $10...
That you can complete in a day.
They will provide you with an "expert" status...
But it is clear that the latter form of "expertise" is very cheap.
What nearly everyone misses when it comes to the idea of expertise in today's world, however...
Is the value of experience...
And wisdom.
In today's world...
Expertise is often granted based on education alone...
Without experience...
Without wisdom...
And without consideration of what expertise really means practically.
It is so easy to become an expert by the world's standard today...
In fact...
All you really need to do is find a platform and call yourself an expert...
And so you are...
At least, according to multiple programs and people that I have been through or followed over the years...
Which largely ended up failing themselves.
But many of these individuals, like this, have some level of success...
Because others do not realize how easy it is to become an "expert" in today's world...
Or fail to understand the nuances between different types of experts.
But this is where Sageship is different.
An expert can, and often does, rest on their laurels.
Once they have their mark of expertise...
That is it...
Until what expertise they have is not considered valuable anymore.
But a Sage never rests on their laurels.
They have an understanding that there is more to learn in the world...
More to experience...
More wisdom to gain...
And so they go seeking to gain that which is still out there.
They do not wait...
They understand that the experiences and wisdom they gain on their journey will be far more valuable than anything that the "experts" of today have to offer.
Indeed...
When you compare an expert next to a true Sage...
It is clear who is more valuable.
Expertise is needed...
But it is not what changes the world.
Experts are good at what is already known...
But Sages are those who define the future.
