What Do You Want?

"The first secret of getting what you want is knowing what you want." - Arthur D. Hlavaty

2020 wasn't exactly one of the most memorable years for many individuals worldwide, not at least in a good sense anyway. With the spread of COVID-19, we not only witnessed the disease causing millions of deaths and cases of illness, all around the globe, but the flow on effect also resulted in numerous job losses, economic devastation, travel restrictions, and a real strangulation on our lifestyle. A couple of lessons that 2020 hopefully taught many people though was firstly, we should never take people or the blessings we have in life for granted, and secondly, we should be really careful what we wish for in the future. With these couple of lessons, I am of course firstly referring to the fact that we should ensure we cherish every moment we have with our loved ones, because we just never know what disease, illness, or tragic event, may lay around the corner, and our time with these precious people in our life, can be taken away in the blink of an eye. What I'm mainly referring to though, is employment. So many people constantly whinge and complain about their job, how much they hate it, how much they dislike the company they work for, how they hate the work they do, how they dislike their boss, and how they wish they didn't have to work at all. That wish came true for many people last year, but in typical human fashion, rather than comprehend how blessed and grateful they were to have had a job at all, whilst they were working there, and understanding how they were actually taking the blessing of having a job for granted, they instead shifted their focus to whinging and complaining about the fact they all of a sudden were facing life without an income. It was the government's fault, or it was this, or it was that!

It's funny how people take for granted what they already have in life, whether it be people, assets, or anything that others around the world would simply die to have. It can be some of the simplest things we have and use every day, without even giving an ounce of thought to, about how blessed we are to have them. From the blessing of eyesight, to operational limbs, to having a roof over our head, to having a bed to sleep in, to having a car to drive, to whatever it may be, we have so much to be grateful for, yet we just take so much for granted. We are always wanting more, and always wanting the newest stuff on the market, that we completely overlook appreciating what we already have. For me, it begs the question to you, what do you want in life? What is it that you desire for your future that would bring you happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment? What is your primary goal? It's concerning because so many of us have a complete lack of appreciation and gratitude, and instead we constantly focus on wanting more. It's also the reason why so many people fail to achieve the happiness, satisfaction, fulfillment, and even success, that they seek in life, because their desires are money centric. It's a simple fact, you can never be satisfied with having more than what you already have, if you can't already be truly appreciative of what you do have. You will always be constantly wanting more.

Having had conversations with previous workmates, customers, friends, associates, and even some loved ones, so many times I have heard people say that they can't wait for retirement. Now I'm talking about people who are aged anywhere between 18 and 45 here. Why would you be looking forward to turning 65, when you're only 45, when there is 20 years of living to do before then, and even worse, why would you be looking forward to turning 65, when you're only 18, when there is 47 years of living to do before then? So many people look forward to retirement with the expectation they can then finally start doing what they want in life, they can start to tick off their goals, and they no longer have to work, but the main reason why people look forward to retirement is the fact they hate their current job. It doesn't make sense though, I mean, we saw last year though, when many people had their job taken away from them, they became even more unhappy, more stressed, and more unsatisfied, than what they were when they had a job. People wished for not having to work, and were granted that, along with the opportunity to start focusing on their goals, yet they instead starting to grizzle and moan about the fact that they didn't have a job. Let's be honest, for most people, what they want in life is to be filthy rich, so they no longer have to work, so they can be debt free, so hey can buy whatever they want and whenever they want, so they can travel wherever they want and whenever they want, so they can live in a mansion, and so they can own brand new state of the art cars and furniture. They want to live the life of a superstar who has no commitments in life. There's just a couple of problems here. One, money doesn't buy happiness, and two, it's not a realistic life, not unless you win a massive jackpot in the lottery, and even then, I don't believe living such a life would be all it's cracked up to be!

We can't live through life wishing and dreaming that we will magically become extraordinarily wealthy and be able to live life without any stress, worries, or work. To do so is plain foolish! So let's eliminate such a life out of our mind, and go back to that question I stated above, what do you want in life? If you are someone who is wishing for retirement, or wishing you had a better job, or even wishing you didn't have to work at all, then you are staring at a massive wake up call right in front of you. If your life is not bringing you satisfaction and happiness at the moment, then plodding along just the way you are isn't going to change or improve anything. It's up to you to make the change, but you can't make the change if you don't even have a direction in which to change to. It's why it's important that we establish both a clear and realistic goal for ourselves. What is that one thing we would like to achieve in life that would totally transform our life for the better? I want you to think of that question though without money being a part of that reward. I want you to think of that special achievement or outcome that would help you both understand, and reveal, your purpose for being on this planet. What is a goal that you have an emotional attachment to, and something that you know full well inside of you, that you would do whatever it takes to achieve it? There should be a personal goal that you would absolutely love to achieve, that would turn your life on its head, and fill you with immense pride, satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment! Only you can establish what that goal is!

It's time to understand that if your priority in life is to chase money, then that's what you will forever spend your life doing, chasing money. You will never find happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment, in life, if you constantly want more of something, especially money. We need to change our mindset about what we think will make us happy, and direct it to what has been proven to make people happy, satisfied, and fulfilled. Happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment, all come from four simple acts and behaviors, them being to help others in life, to give and receive love, to do what you are passionate about, and to be grateful for all that you have. It's these four acts and behaviors that our main goal should be centered around. These are proven to provide people with the happiness, satisfaction, fulfillment, and ultimately success, that they have always longed for, so why don't more of us adopt these behaviors, and execute these actions? Perhaps it's time we actually revisited our priorities and goals in life, and get a true assessment of what we really want in life and our future. If you're not finding happiness, satisfaction, fulfillment, or success in life, then it's not too late to make a change, and begin steering your life in the right direction. Don't be afraid to take some risks and make some uncomfortable decisions, just do what you need to do to find happiness now, rather than wasting away your years waiting for retirement.
