Weathering the Storm

2021 - The Art of Self-Management

By Alex YoungPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

We are meant to be challenged. We are built to strive and fail and continue. You cannot be truly happy without challenges. With challenges comes success and failure. With success is something to take pride in, and your identity.

This is what I've used year after year, to turn myself into who I've wanted to become.

Destination:

Decide what kind of person you want to be. What does that look like, sound like? Who do they act like?

Are they stronger, fitter, smarter, more disciplined, more wealthy?

All progress will take time. You have to be prepared to put in the work, and see no results, because it will take time. Putting in the right work, consistently, will produce results.

Environment for Success:

Great people are created through their habits on an average day. Take one week, seven days. Track exactly how you are spending your time throughout the day, every minute, and what occupies your time most, is what you have chosen to care about most. That is also the direction your life is headed.

The phrase "you are who you spend the most time with" is exactly right in the fact that your environment is extremely important to where you are, and also finding your trajectory.

Put yourself in an environment of people who think like you would like to think (Listen to podcasts, attend clubs, join sports..etc).

Pay attention to how you appear to other people and control what you can (making these changes is enough to change the world for you and your career path):

Act like the job you want, not the job you have. If you're looking to move up, show the people above you that you're able to fill the duties of the job above you.

Hair, shave, attire, posture.

Pay attention to how you talk to other people.

Be comfortable smiling, shaking hands, making eye contact, avoid using filler words.

This is all enough to begin your change into the person you seek to become, but now that you have a destination and an attitude to get there, you need the tools to face the adversity that will come up.

Resilience:

Consistency is always key.

If you are struggling to keep up in life, you're probably lacking in one of these areas. If you strengthen all of these areas, you'll be well equipped to face the challenges ahead.

Mental

Challenge yourself constantly, to do better.

Social

Spend time with family, and friends.

Physical

Challenge yourself constantly, to do better.

Spiritual

Volunteering / Church

Three Week Rule:

Anything that you are committing yourself to, early wakeups, losing weight, fitness goals, there are mental barriers that exist everywhere, but after three weeks will be the easiest point to simply continue, right before three weeks will be some of the biggest mental barriers and the most important point to be resilient. Make it through three weeks, and then continue to be consistent.

Consistency is always key - The days it is the hardest to be consistent, are the days that matter the most

Troubleshooting:

Quantify your problems, and places you need to improve, write them down so you know exactly what you may have an issue with.

Reflect at the end of each week, be honest with yourself, and strive to do better.

Create checklists to keep track of things that need to get done. Things always need to get done, so make sure that you always know what

Final Thoughts:

This is what I've used for years, it's just I've written down the formula for you to take what you can from it. Consistency is key, make it through the three weeks as the person you want to be coming, and keep pushing.

Have a great 2021! Not because you waited for luck and chance to give you it, but because you went out and made 2021 your year.
