Understanding Competition In The Game Of Success

Why Most People Struggle To Ever Taste Success

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published a day ago 4 min read

A lot of people want success in life...

But few will ever taste it.

How few?

Very few.

Let's take American Football as an example, because today is the Super Bowl.

Of all the players who play in high school...

2.4% to 3% go on to play in the NCAA at the D1 level.

Of all the players who go to play in college...

About 1.6% go to play in the NFL.

Of all the players in the NFL...

Only 1 team wins the Super Bowl...

That means that only 3.125% of the players in the NFL take the Super Bowl.

At each level...

We are looking at about the same numbers...

96.875% to 98.4% have success.

This also seems to match the statistics of life overall...

98% of people end up on their deathbeds regretting how they lived their lives.

This means that about 2% of people...

Have the success in life they desire.

But why is it so low?

A large part of the reason...

Is that the competition for success is intense...

So intense...

That few people ever make it through.

But there is a bit more to it.

For instance...

Many people never "really" play the game of success.

What do I mean?

Some people never even attempt to play...

Claiming that the game is rigged without ever testing whether it is true...

Believing society's claims and broken beliefs, creating a defeatist mindset and victim mentality before even trying...

A large part of where regret comes from.

Another significant portion enters the game...

But do not put forth real effort.

Here's the reality...

If you do not put in the effort to be one of the best...

You will not be.

Even people with the natural talent to become the best...

Frequently fail because they do not put in enough effort reach their real potential...

And therefore lose.

What comes after that, though?

The basics.

So many people believe that becoming the best requires one to do the coolest moves...

Have the newest tools...

Look the best...

Have the most money...

But none of these are true.

Far more often lacking these become the excuses people utilize to stop competing in the game.

The truth, however, is that far more often, it is the lack of basics where people really fail.

Think of it like building a tower...

If you try to build up too quickly without a solid base...

The tower collapses.

This is how many approach trying to become the best...

And a significant number quit when they encounter their first collapse...

Then for those who continue...

Without the basics, they can only handle so many collapses before they quit.

But when you get the basics...

The next area people struggle with is consistency.

Those who tend to rise to the top...

Are the ones who are the most consistent...

They live and breathe what they do...

They play the game on their best days...

And they play the game harder on their worst days.

There is nothing short of a medical emergency or an act of God that will prevent them from getting in the game...

And even then, sometimes that is not enough to fully stop them.

Most people consider that level of dedication inhuman...

But the reality is that it is really hyper-human...

It is just that few people actually understand their own potential and never even touch close to it.

There is still one more thing...

That really separates those who succeed from the rest...

And this is perhaps the least understood and appreciated part of success...

Recovery.

See...

When you push yourself to hyper-extremes...

You have to break yourself in the process.

Not completely...

But enough to force your body to adapt.

See, our bodies desire equilibrium...

Homeostasis...

And to become the best...

We need to break that equilibrium to push ourselves to higher levels.

That part is easy for most people to understand...

But what they fail to understand is that recovery is the real key to getting us to higher levels of equilibrium.

See, it is not in the breaking where we become better...

It is in the rebuilding.

Most people will break themselves down without rebuilding to their higher level...

Meaning that they continue to break down...

Further and further...

Until they completely destroy themselves.

Burnout.

Injuries.

Mental breakdown.

Spiritual collapse.

All of these and more can and do happen when you commit yourself intensely in the game of success.

The further you commit yourself...

The more intense your recovery needs to become.

Few people dedicate themselves to recovery...

It is an afterthought as opposed to something they consider mastering...

And that is why they fail in the game of success...

Having their careers end far earlier than they should.

If you really want to win the game of success...

You need all of these.

But here is what most people also fail to understand...

Few people actually do all of these things.

What does that mean?

If you actually dedicate yourself to all of these...

The true competition that exists in the game of success is slim to none.

There is a reason that most of the people who win...

Are a small group of people...

Who often continue to win...

Over and over again.

That happens because the true pool of people who are playing the game at this level is extremely small.

Sometimes even tiny.

This means that it is highly likely that you win again and again.

This is also why so many people believe the game is rigged...

When you see the same people win over and over again...

It can be easy to assume that the game is rigged in their favor.

But the reality is that few people ever truly compete.

If you want to win the game of success...

No matter which game you are playing in...

You need to really compete.

Are you willing to compete at the absolute highest levels...

To succeed at the highest levels?
