To Hell With Resolutions

Find a new way to achieve what you desire this year

By Niyah HeaggansPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Going into this new year, I have decided not to set myself up for failure by making New Year's resolutions. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against resolutions or people who make them. For the people who find good resolutions and stick to them, more power to you. As an average person, I've come to realize that for most people, resolutions are something we hype ourselves up about, and stick to for maybe a week. Well, I say no more.

After the year we just had, we deserve to be nicer to ourselves. I say we list our goals and focus on positive affirmations. Again, even with this, don't go all gung ho and write a big list of goals. Over time this will not only intimidate but unmotivate you. It's not that the list of goals is unattainable, it's seeing them listed all at once that can make it feel impossible to do them or so we just give up instead. To combat this feeling, I suggest making a couple of small goals per month.

By focusing on fewer goals at a time, you provide yourself with enough time to achieve them in the way YOU want to. Be selfish this year. If 2020 taught us anything, it's that you never know how much time you have before something is taken away. Also, when you achieve one of your goals, make sure you celebrate. Too often we don't celebrate ourselves. Who is that helping? If you cleaned out your garage, started working out, or even bought a car make sure you celebrate yourself. With the pace of today's world, we don't focus enough on the small wins. The small wins are just as significant as the big ones and you have a right to shower yourself with love and positivity.

Also, make a list of positive affirmations to say to yourself every morning. You can set them up as a reminder on your phone, write them in a notebook, or even get a marker and write them on your bathroom mirror. No matter what you decide, put them somewhere you can see them. Find resolutions that align with either where you are currently in your life or where you're trying to go. Take some time with this process, don't rush it. Really take a look at yourself and figure out what you need.

Once you find them, write them out and repeat them to yourself at least twice. You can recite them in the mirror when you're getting ready, or record them and listen to them in the car on your way to work. Wherever you decide to do it is fine, just make sure you do it.

The key to this process is CONSISTENCY and REPETITION

By doing this every day, you are taking steps towards living a better life. You're speaking positivity into your life and reminding yourself that you are worthy of all things you want. One of my personal affirmations is, "I live where the money resides." I say this to myself because I am manifesting financial blessings this year.

I hope this advice helps anyone already struggling with their resolutions and would like to leave you with one thing: Do what makes you happy and do it in your own time. I know it's easy to feel less than or feel like you're failing because you see your peers flaunting their successes on social media. But, something I had to learn is that comparison is the thief of joy. Not everything we see on social media is exactly what we think it is and even if someone did reach their goal before you so what. Your path is your own to walk and you can only attract what you're ready to receive.

Happy New Year! Peace and Love
