So, you have been telling yourself your entire life that you HAVE NO TIME! You are so busy! You don’t want to go to work. You don’t want to (Insert anything you have ever NOT wanted to do) and BOOM 2020 FINALLY Delivered!
And now, you have TOO Much Time! The irony!
How have you chosen to spend your time? What’s the next show on Netflix? Maybe, becoming TikTok Famous? #MomsofTiktok? No judgement, it is a guilty pleasure for sure, one that I understand!
Though these provide a good check-out from reality and can be an excellent short-term solution to escaping and numbing the mind, W.E. don’t suggest it be your only go to! So how can you take control of this time and do something for YOU and really dive into caring for yourself!
Let me share some of my thoughts on some ways you can take better care of yourself during these uncertain times.
1. Recognize what you are allowing into your mind. Though it is important to keep up to date on what’s going on in the world, it is also important to protect yourself from FEAR. Take control of what you have coming in. If the news is a must, watch it Mid-day. Why mid-day? Because allowing the negativity to seep into your mind first thing in the morning is basically like getting out of bed in the morning and stubbing your toe. It hurts you; it puts you in a bad mood. So, don’t do it! And why not at night? Filling your mind with negative news right before bed is going to have you thinking about all the bad in the world that you can’t change or do anything about as you fall asleep. You will be up all night stressed out. Then, you will wake up, you’ll thinking about your problems or the world's problems and be starting your day on the proverbial “wrong side of the bed”.
So, protect your mind from what you allow in it. Be choosey about what you read on social media, watch on the news and conversate about!
2. Take time to appreciate what is being handed to you. Even if it is not all good at times, let’s face it, before Covid, it wasn’t all good either. You have been blessed with more time, right now. Less to do socially and more time to fill your home with love and gratitude. Open your heart to the wonderful world of your home and your family. Giving thanks to what you do have, and CAN do will help you think outside the box when life and the world is feeling heavy.
3. Learn something new. You FINALLY have the TIME to do ALL those things you have ALWAYS wanted to do!!! (unless it was to travel the world…. Then, you are out of luck for the time being.) This is the perfect time to start an online business. Take an online course. Learn to knit, cook, do your makeup, learn to meditate, try out yoga or anything DIY. We all have that mile long ‘Wish I Could…’ list! Now is the time to dive in and try something new.
PS. Don’t freak out about the online business thing. Really, if you have a hobby that you love already or have found one that you love during COVID. Turn it into a business. Not sure if you can, start asking people, “If I did this, or created that would you need it, want it, buy it?” Then create!
4. DREAM! Plan your future. What are you doing when this is over? Dream it, Plan it, See it and Create it. What does it look like, feel like, taste like and smell like? Your eyes have been opened to a new way of life! You are seeing things likely in a much different way, so now it is time to continue with that! Maybe you have heard this before but doing a family vision board is always so much fun. It lights your children up like Christmas when they receive something from the vision board. A big part of vision boarding that is often missed though, is celebrating when that wish, goal or dream happens! Girl, you and your family deserved it! So, celebrate it!
Which brings me to
5. CELEBRATE your daily wins! Maybe a win is that you got out of bed and got dressed today! You brushed your hair and did your makeup! Maybe you worked out or walked the dog for 5 minutes longer! Maybe you decided to start something new or started working out. Maybe you just weren’t riddled with fear today. Your kids laughed. Heck, you laughed! These are all wins, Beautiful, and you must celebrate them. Recognize them. They bring happiness to you and your family.
6. Turn off your cell phone! Put your phone on airplane mode an hour (minimum) before you go to bed at night and don’t turn it back on until at least an hour after you get out of bed. Again, this is mind protection. Let’s not stub our minds like we do our toes first thing in the morning. Your mind and body will fight you on this one. Try it, you will find you experience much more peace in your life.
7. Surround yourself with things that make you feel good. They will help you feel confident and will create a lovely atmosphere. Maybe it is as simple as a mug you love to drink from or a favorite wine glass! Yeah, we know you have increased your wine intake! We are positive it isn’t just us!
8. Get on the floor and play with your kids or animals. Go outside and lay in the grass or touch a tree. Ground yourself. Have fun and breathe! If you’re close to nature go walk there. I take my son to the ocean every week. We ground ourselves, play and I meditate and visualize. Yahozka has made sure to create more time with her boys and they get outside, and they play as a family!
In closing. Self-care during these times is crucial and it all really comes down to protecting your mind and filling your life with love, gratitude, and happiness whenever and wherever you can.
I wanted to give you more than just your average self-care list! Many of these things you may have heard before, but my hope is that you find something in this article you can relate to and create positive change in your current Covid situation, and bring it to the future!
*Disclaimer. I recognize that Covid is very real and has negatively impacted Millions. We do not take anything away from that. So please know this article comes to you with love.
