The Story of a Kite

Children, this is the story of a kite that had been circling around a large pigeon house for many days. It was constantly watching, waiting for the right moment to swoop down and snatch a flying pigeon so it could satisfy its hunger. However, the pigeons were very agile, clever, and fast flyers. Whenever the kite tried to catch one of them, the pigeon would quickly escape.

The kite grew increasingly frustrated. Despite repeated attempts, it failed every time. Finally, it realized that brute force alone would not work. It needed a different strategy.

For several days, the kite thought deeply. At last, it came up with a clever plan. One day, instead of attacking, the kite approached the pigeons peacefully—as a guest. It sat quietly among them for a while and then spoke gently and lovingly:

“Brothers and sisters! I am a bird just like you, with two wings and two legs. You can fly in the sky, and so can I. The only difference is that I am larger and stronger, while you are smaller and weaker. I hunt other animals, but you cannot. I can attack a cat and wound or even kill it with my sharp beak and claws, while you remain helpless against enemies.”

The kite continued in a soothing voice, “You live in constant fear—especially of cats. I want to protect you completely so that you may live freely, happily, and peacefully. Freedom is your birthright, and protecting that freedom is my duty. I feel sorrow knowing that you are afraid of me, even though I care so deeply about your safety.”

The pigeons listened attentively as the kite went on. “I stand against oppression. My only wish is that you live fearless, calm, and secure lives. I want us to reach an agreement. Let us promise to live together peacefully, face our enemies united, and enjoy freedom. But this can only happen if you accept me wholeheartedly as your king.”

The kite added, “Once you grant me authority and make me your ruler, your protection and freedom will become entirely my responsibility.”

Day after day, the kite returned and repeated these words sweetly and convincingly. Gradually, the pigeons began to trust its gentle speeches. Eventually, they held a meeting among themselves and decided to accept the kite as their king.

A grand coronation ceremony was held. The kite took an oath with great pride, promising to protect the pigeons’ freedom, ensure their safety, and deliver justice to all. In return, the pigeons pledged complete loyalty and obedience to their new king.

For some time afterward, everything seemed peaceful. The kite regularly visited the pigeon house and appeared to take good care of them. One day, when a large cat came near the pigeons’ shelter, the kite and its companions launched a fierce attack, forcing the cat to flee. Witnessing this, the pigeons’ respect and trust in the kite grew even stronger.

The kite continued to charm them with kind words, constantly reminding them of protection and freedom. As time passed, the pigeons became fearless and moved freely around the kite. They felt content and secure, believing their lives were now safe under its rule.

One morning, as the pigeons were pecking at grain, the kite arrived looking weak and unwell. It sat silently for a while and then spoke in a commanding, royal tone:

“Brothers and sisters, I am your ruler. You chose me wisely as your king. I protect you, and you live in peace and comfort. But you must understand that I too have needs. It is my royal right to choose one of you whenever I wish and satisfy my hunger. How long can I survive without food? How long can I continue protecting you without fulfilling my own needs?”

The kite continued, “This is not only my right but the right of my royal family as well. They also help protect your freedom. If my family and I had not attacked the cat that day, many of you would have been eaten or injured.”

With these words, the kite moved closer, seized a plump pigeon in its claws, and flew away. The remaining pigeons stood frozen in shock.

From that day on, the king kite and its family began visiting regularly, taking whichever pigeon they desired. Fear spread throughout the pigeon house. The pigeons lost their peace, security, and freedom. They now felt more unsafe than ever before.

In despair, they began saying to one another, “This is the punishment for our foolishness. Why did we ever make the kite our king? Now what can we do?”
