The Rapper meets a Middle Aged Woman
How a chance meeting in a post office starts a friendship that changed both their lives.

Life is about taking chances and being open to all possibilities. I've always been an open book myself. I will talk to anyone, try almost anything, within reason, and am open to all topics that I am not familiar with. I also knew at a very young age, although I could never put a name to it, about the laws of attraction and syncronicity.
An amazing series of events led me to meet a young man who's life would change dramatically because of his own search for his life's purpose, our chance meeting and the lessons he would soon learn and master.
The whole story started during a routine task that had to be done..getting my two young sons passports renewed. With all the required documents in hand we set out for what we thought was a short wait in line at the local Post Office. As with any government agency, the short wait turned into an hours long affair. There was nowhere to sit down, no place to go to the bathroom and nothing to eat or drink. After a few hours, the long line of people waiting for similar services were starting to get restless and aggravated. Many were starting to venture out of line to go to the Burger King next door, for food and to go to the bathroom.
During this time, I had struck up various conversations with several people who stood nearby. Being irritated with the post office and everything that we were enduring, I started to rave about how government was so inefficient and began talking about other issues related to it.
In front of me, was a young black man, tattoos on his neck, gold teeth and his pants sagging down. I hadn't paid much attention to him before and normally wouldn't even have looked sideways at him, as he looked a bit menacing to me and someone I wouldn't normally interact with in my daily life. He had just taken his headphones down as his brother approached with a bag of food from Burger King. Evidently he had called him to bring him something to eat as he too waited for his number to be called and was getting hungry and aggravated.
Just as he dropped his headphones, he heard the conversations I was having with my fellow line waiters and immediately voiced his own opinion to what I was talking about. I was dumbfounded. And his opinions surprised me! They were very similar to my own! Never in a million years did I ever imagine a guy like this having similar views on politics and other related topics as mine. I looked at him with a bit of shock on my face and proceeded to talk to him. We immediately hit it off.
Here I was, a middle aged, middle classed, white woman with two kids in tow, having a very spirited and meaningful conversation with someone I would never normally talk to. I admit that I judged him. His name was Darrius. He was an aspiring rapper who was trying to get a passport to be able to go to the Bahamas to do a 'gig' over there.
He too, started to engage the other people waiting in line and before too long, he had a whole crowd of people, young and old, standing around him. He was recounting his experiences as a young man, stories of how he wound up in jail due to his selling drugs as a teenager, getting in constant trouble, hating everyone and everything. Then one day, while he was in jail, his brother came and gave him a bible which Darrius started reading. He knew that something had to change and the first thing that needed to be adjusted was his attitude. Reading the bible had softened him.
We stood there for literally hours and hours and it was turning out to be something fun and entertaining. The kids were mezmerized by Darrius' stories and he was determined to make them realize that the path he had taken was not something to be followed. He had learned the hard way that this was not what life was about.
So while we were standing there, I began to talk to Darrius about my own experiences and how I was in tune to using the Laws of Attraction. I told him about a book I had read called The Secret and mentioned a DVD that I had watched that literally changed my life. Darrius immediately took what I said to heart and ordered the video while we were standing there.
By the end of our time there at the post office, we had become unlikely friends although I never thought I'd see him again. He promised to send my son a CD with the songs he was working on and at the time I didn't think much of it. We exchanged numbers and parted ways.
About a week later, I got a CD in the mail...from Darrius! Wow, was I surprised! He had followed through with something he said he was going to do and I was so pleasantly surprised! Not many people do what they say they are going to do. Even myself at times.
So I opened the package and immediately sat down to listen to his CD. It was the typical rap stuff, something I could not relate to at all! I admired his determination but felt that his message was all just wrong. So I had my sons put on some rap music to get into the feel of it and proceeded to write some uplifting lyrics. I sent Darrius a letter telling him how proud I was of him and how he surprised me with the follow up that he promised. I also included the words to my song...with the hopes that Darrius would take it to heart. I felt that he should continue paying it forward and write music to inspire, not copy cat what other rap artists were doing. I wrote lyrics that related everything he had told me about his upbringing and how to inspire other young people to find a different path than violence and despair.
So I sent the letter and didn't think too much more about it. Again, I never thought I'd hear from Darrius.
A week later, I was away in NYC on a business trip and my son called me and said mom, listen to this! It was a song Darrius had written with MY lyrics! I couldn't believe it! It turned out to be a great song! He took what we had been talking about and started to really heed the advice. There were no more cuss words, no more talk about the degradation of women, no more for advocating violence. This is what began a total transformation of him.
Darrius started meditating. He was buying every kind of self help book and books about the Laws of Attraction. He watched the DVD, The Secret. He then wrote another song and mentioned my name and how we met, in the song. Suddenly things were starting to change for him, in the most positive way! He realized that becoming a rapper was not in his cards. It was not the lifestyle that he had been searching for but hadn't up until this time, realized what he was supposed to do. Meeting me had knocked him up side the head and he suddenly became aware of what he should do.
He had an opportunity to learn how to drive big trucks and spent his last $60 to get a license for that. And immediately after passing the course, got a great job as a long haul trucker. He starting making very good money and along the way, would talk to everyone and anyone, to pass along a message of hope and transformation. He had a great time traveling all across the U.S. and used that opportunity to talk to many different people.
We continued our friendship and I spoke to him like he was one of my sons. I told him to pull up his pants, take his gold teeth out and start to present himself in a professional manner. I didn't mince words with him and he did not resent me for it because it was done with loving intentions on my part. I would say the same thing to my own boys if they were heading in the wrong direction. Darrius appreciated the tough love and we bonded. I grew to love him and saw him become such a caring, smart and motivated man.
He went on to meet a beautiful woman, a nurse, who he had known when they were in high school. We had talked about committment and about being a good role model for his kids (he had two children to another baby mama and I stressed to him that he needed to step up to the plate and take his obligations with them seriously so they wouldn't end up making the wrong choices in life). I also told him that if he loved this girl, he should make a committment and put a ring on her finger, also to teach his children about being there for someone that you love. He did what I said, and shortly after dating for a little while, Darrius proposed and they were married a year later in a beautiful ceremony. They went on to have a house built and had a baby a short time later.
So now, Darrius is living the life he had always dreamed about, with a beautiful wife, a new house, and a gorgeous baby boy. They have started a business together and although I haven't seen him for awhile now, I note his successes through Facebook. We still keep in touch from time to time and I am just so happy to see how he's changed. I know he tries to inspire others and is so grateful for his own good fortune. It was no accident as he attracted it all to himself just by being aware and listening to his own intuition and from a voice from the universe or God. It took him where he needed to go and he will always heed its message.
For me, I learned a very big lesson too. I learned not to judge people. There is that saying "never judge a book by it's cover" and that is so true. Never ever would I have had an opportunity to meet someone like Darrius due to my own prejudices, age, and circle of friends. The fact is that many of us have much more in common than we think. Being open minded is the key and listening to and loving others even if they are different than yourself.
The Laws of Attraction led me to Darrius and I'm so grateful that I had a part in helping someone else achieve all their dreams. For that I am happy.
