My alarm clocked roared at 6:00 in the morning like it did every day, I quickly turned it off and put my feet on the floor. As I was getting ready for my day I received a reminder on my phone saying, ‘Annual Review Due Tomorrow.’ I quickly tossed my phone on the counter and became anxious. I had been working at this job for nearly a year and had been dreading this moment for months. Every time I would go to write my review I would delete the words that I had carefully chosen knowing fully they were lies. Every day I’d force myself to walk into the building and begin my day with a smile.

What was so wrong with my job you may ask? Well, the customers were rude, the company didn’t communicate, the pay was low, no one seemed to enjoy being there and the job itself didn’t bring me any purpose or meaning. I knew today that it would be my last day walking in that building and clocking in. As I helped customer after customer my eyes couldn’t help but gravitate to the clock. “One more day, just get through this day and you’ll never have to come back here again.” You see I decided a week ago that I would take a leap of faith and just quit my job trusting that I would find something that was meaningful — in enough time for me to pay rent again. When it was finally time to leave for the day I said my goodbyes trying to act normal as possible.

As I was leaving I decided to grab my special pen and my sticky note that said, “Stop procrastinating” that I had written to myself one afternoon to encourage myself to take control of my life and to stop putting my life on the back burner. As I was walking out to leave something caught my eye, It was the little black book that I had been given my first day of work. The book was beautiful, sleek and well crafted, it was so well made that I never could find anything meaningful enough to write in it. I grabbed the book and walked out of the building as quickly as I could.

A few days later I was at home scrolling through a job finder app and I got a call asking if I could come in for an interview. I of course accepted and I met with the man the very next day. The job title was Direct Care, I would be taking care of 2 autistic men in their apartment and assisting them with anything they needed help with throughout the day. The owner had me begin immediately after my interview because I made a good impression, He loved how positive I was and how much experience I had working with autistic people.

The following day I was at work cleaning up from dinner and the owner knocks on the door. He sits me down and starts asking me questions about myself. He asks me if I have ever heard of the Law of Attraction. I told him yes but I don’t know how it works. He started explaining to me that whatever you put out into the universe is yours. He said that one day he decided he was going to focus on one thing he truly wanted every morning until it was his. The first thing he thought of was $50,000 to start his business. He got up every morning and it was the first thing he thought of. He ended up getting the $50,000 from a woman that wanted him to take care of her autistic son and he used that money to begin his business the following year. He told me he wanted me to try it as well.

After he left I replayed everything he told me in my mind, it was so inspiring how he used positivity to get whatever he wanted out of life. Every day he would use affirmations, even if they weren’t true in that moment he knew if he told himself they would eventually become fact. The next morning I woke up thinking about it. I pulled out that little black book that I had taken with me from my previous job and began to write “$20,000” and I closed the book. I got ready for work and every day when I woke up I would think about the $20,000 and how I was going to obtain it without it being apart of my salary from my job.

A month goes by and I get up every morning thinking about this $20,000 that I had written down in my book. Every morning I got up and wrote down one thing I was thankful for that morning, which quickly turned into 20 a day. I wrote down everything positive about myself and about my future self and who I wanted to truly be.

As I was heading to work I realized that I was so happy with my new job. The guys I was working with gave me so much purpose in life. Every day I was excited to head to work, I was most thankful for taking the leap of faith to leave my dead end job. Every day I’d walk into their apartment and the two men were so excited to see me. The truth is, I was just as excited to see them. I realized that the more I was taking the time to be thankful for my life and the little things in it I had been transforming into a better version of myself daily. Each morning seemed so much better than the day before, I was filled with so much joy that I stopped focusing on the $20,000.

I went into work day after day being grateful for everything around me and how blessed I truly was, I couldn’t believe that I didn’t realize how much I had to be thankful for before now. I got out my little black book after the men I take care of went to bed and I just started writing hundreds of things I was thankful for. Tears started flowing from my eyes like a river as I wrote page after page of all that I have to be grateful for. I was overwhelmed with happiness and gratitude. I meditated in that peace just being thankful for a moment and when my shift was finished I headed home, feeling peace flowing over me, something that I had never felt before, it was liberating.

The next day I hopped out of bed, I drank some coffee while writing my affirmations down in my book. The sun was shining and I could feel it on my skin through the opening of my blinds, I look out the window and the mail man was walking to my door. I got up to greet him and collect my mail. I took the mail to my kitchen table and go through it. There was a larger envelope that stood out so I opened it first. Inside was a letter written from my late grandma who had passed away a little over a year ago. My grandpa had found it and decided to send it to me. I read the letter, tears filling my eyes until I could hardly make out the words. She wrote me this letter to let me know how much she loved me and that she was sorry she wasn’t more present in my life. She was sick with cancer and dying so she decided to sell her beanie baby collection and she wanted to give me the money from it to help me start living out some of my dreams. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I opened the envelope and inside was a check written out to me for $20,000. I sat there staring at the check, 15 minutes must have gone by. As I went to stand up to call my fiancé I hit the side of the table and dropped my little black book, I quickly picked it up and there on the page looking back at me said, “$20,000”. I nearly fainted. Everything my boss had told me was true, if you put it out into the universe it will come back to you, even when you’re least expecting it.

It’s been years since I received that letter and check. I now have my own business taking care of autistic clients and the letter is displayed on the wall in my office next to my little black notebook. Occasionally people ask me what the book is and I happily tell them, “that book changed my life forever” and I hand them an empty notebook similar to mine and I explain the law of attraction like my boss did for me. It is up to them what they decide to write in it. I tell them to take a leap of faith, trust that the universe will send you an abundance of goodness your way.
