Take Responsibility for Your Life

Embrace your inner power to shape your destiny

By Chris Fortson Published 3 years ago 3 min read

For many people, life is tough. Even so, it's important to remember that you are in control of your own life and how you choose to react to the challenges and opportunities that come your way. Taking responsibility for your life means recognizing that you are the driver of your own journey and that your actions and decisions have a direct impact on your outcomes.

Whenever, I think of taking responsibility for one’s life, I always recall Jocko Willink’s Ted talk. In this Willink recalls an incident in the war in Ramadi, Iraq, where fratricide occurred between friendly forces due to mistakes, human error, poor judgment and bad luck. As he prepared to debrief on the operation, he came to the realization that there was only one person to blame: himself. He stood before his commanding officer and team and took full responsibility for the confusion, wounded men, and death of the friendly Iraqi soldier. Despite his team members taking the blame, he argued that it was not their fault but his own as the leader in charge. The story emphasizes the concept of "extreme ownership," meaning taking full responsibility for actions and outcomes, even if others are involved. Willink’s book “Extreme Ownership” can be purchased from the following Amazon link: https://amzn.to/40qt1Zg It’s a good book and one I recommend to anyone who finds themselves blaming others for things that go wrong in one’s own life. Additionally, i would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to take full ownership of one's actions and decisions to achieve success in any team environment, including military, business, or personal relationships.

So, what does taking responsibility for your life actually look like? Here are some key steps you can take to start embracing your power and shaping your own destiny:

1) Recognize that you are in control: You may not be able to control everything that happens to you, but you can control how you respond to it. Understanding this can be incredibly freeing and empowering.

2) Set high aspirations: No matter what cards life has dealt you, it's up to you to make the most of your situation. Set high aspirations for yourself and work towards achieving them, regardless of obstacles.

3) Take care of your health: Your health is one of the most important aspects of your life and it's important to take care of it. Make sure you're eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. This will give you the energy and focus you need to tackle the rest of your life.

4) Cultivate meaningful relationships: Relationships are key to a happy and fulfilled life. Make an effort to build meaningful connections with those around you and keep your relationships healthy and positive.

5) Take control of your finances: Financial stability is essential for long-term happiness and success. Start by creating a budget, paying off debt, and saving for the future.

6) Embrace challenges: Life is full of challenges and obstacles, but it's important to see them as opportunities for growth and personal development. Don't shy away from a challenge, embrace it and work towards overcoming it.

7) Celebrate your successes: It's important to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may be. Recognizing your achievements can give you the confidence and motivation to keep pushing forward.

To wrap things up, taking responsibility for your life is about embracing your power to shape your own destiny. It's about recognizing that you are in control of your actions and decisions and that these things have a direct impact on your outcomes. So, start taking control of your life today and work towards becoming the person you want to be.
