Cultivating a Founder Mindset
It was 8pm on Friday, Jan 23, 2016, the day before the Blizzard of 2016 rattled the mid-Atlantic states producing widespread record snowfall. I was just back from a long vacation and found myself at the local Home Depot store, frantically looking for salt to spread on my driveway before the snow storm started.

How I'm Learning to Trust My Writing Voice
Some are born with a purpose, others have to wait until a crisis for clarity, and for some, it never comes. For myself, it's always been writing. That doesn't mean I didn't deny myself my occupation. I convinced myself it was too competitive or that I lacked the talent. I refused to accept my purpose because I was scared to fail.

Anyone Can Become An Author
You might say that title up there is obvious, right? You are probably thinking, of course anyone can become an author, that's not uncommon knowledge. But what most people don't know, about becoming an author, is how easy it is to find their story. They give up because, "what am I suppose to write about," is the last question they ask themselves, and that question never finds its answer. There are millions of amazing stories waiting to be told and probably millions that will go untold, because someone does not know how to start. So I am writing a little how to guide, based on this uncommon knowledge, to help you tell your story in hopes that maybe one day I will get to read it.

Searching for Destiny
Today is one of those days that I am thrilled to not have anywhere I need to be other than my couch. There is a fire burning in the fireplace, the love of my life (my dog) is snuggled up next to me, and I am watching inch after inch pile up on my patio. It is the perfect day for a writer and I have excitedly been working on my first novel. Huge thing, right? I mean, they say everyone has a novel in them, but this story has been knocking around my brain for years and I thrilled by the opportunity to finally get it out of my head. I can’t help but wonder if anyone will read it when I’m done or will it sit in a drawer, unpublished and unread. I supposed it doesn’t matter any more than a painter having their paintings displayed in a gallery or a wood carver being able to sell their intricate renditions of Audubon images. It is the joy of the medium and the creative process that make it worth doing.

I am not...
A lot of things have surprised me in life, but none more than the amount of times I’ve discovered I’m not a writer. When I was a child, I acted as a child, that is an admissible excuse. It’s elementary school, possible first or second grade, when we are given an assignment… “Starting with each letter of the alphabet, choose an animal and write a sentence about why you like them, and also illustrate a picture of the animal. One letter per page.” I arrive home after school to my Walkman where I left it, plugged into a variety of other electronics, I pretend to hijack the radio waves and begin my fake broadcast across the stereos of the neighborhood. My parents discover the assignment a few days before it’s due, and force me to work on it. I finish the assignment and go back to my pretend world where I believe myself to be the local radio disc jockey. The teacher gives my parents the option of having a published copy of the book I had made. I feel good. Today, it is in a box in my home, somewhere. I am not a writer.

My love affair with words
For as long as I can remember I have been a storyteller. I like words and they like me back. Speaking was my skill from a very young age and I shared the pride that my father felt when I reproduced the most intricate words like it was baby babble.

JEKALYN CARR
JEKALYN CARR IS MY GIRL! Hardly twenty-four years old, Jekalyn is a Black gospel singer, whose voice exudes power; skill; resonance; and beauty beyond her tender years. Her singing style is similar to that of a well-seasoned veteran, such as the much acclaimed Shirley Caesar of the Black Gospel genre. Jekalyn also has the gift of sharing biblical excerpts and illustrations in her lyrics that have such a meaningful, that is, relevant connection to current life that transcends race or color or status. It is often said that life's great equalizer is that one is either in a storm... just coming out of a storm... or about to enter a storm --- c'est la vie!
