happiness
Happiness, defined; things that help you find happiness, keep it, and share it with others.

Another day on the job. Paul was sitting in his usual spot sipping on some “mountain mud” as he calls it, black coffee made way too strong for human consumption. He looked the same as the first day we met, gray and wrinkly. Routinely writing in the little black notebook he never let me look at.

All the Ones I've Never Met Before
It was the perfect day for soup. Saturday afternoon was usually an invitation to spend a little extra time in the kitchen in itself, but on this particular Saturday, a cool wind sent a draft through the house, signaling a craving for something piping and warm.

The Answers are in the Cards
I walk through my neighbourhood, which still feels relatively new to me. I’ve just returned to my home city after an extended stretch of travel, that has changed me profoundly at my core. I venture to the small, noticeably ordinary parquette nearby and spend time people-watching from a wooden park bench. The novelty of this daily routine is already wearing off. The same streets, boxy buildings and stark concrete landscape in view. The asphalt as grey as my mood. New neighbourhood, same city. I’m reminded of a quote a fellow globetrotter had written in my travel journal:

Expect the Unexpected
Sometimes, you gotta expect the unexpected. Or at least, that’s what I think they said. Every day for the past five years has been the same, a monotonous cycle of work with little play, deadlines, heartbreak, and instability. Of the same four walls of my bland room, littered with impersonal knick-knacks and souvenirs I’ve picked up on my trips deeper into the city. My soul ached for something different, something new, but alas, I just didn’t have the time.

The Little Black Book
The cold air frosted the tips of my beard and turned my nose scarlet. I bundled up in layers of raggedy clothes but it still wasn't enough, the small holes gained entry for frost that seemed to lead up my spine . Shivering violently and I could smell my hair as I scooted closer to the fire. Another man came around the fire and sat by me , he handed me a warm cup . At first I didn't take it nor even look at it , but he shoved it into my hand to as if to where if I didn't take it would had spilled. It smelled of cheese and broccoli and I could feel my stomach come to life.

Always turn the Page
As the seasons change the new day brought warm temperatures accompanied by bright sun beams shining over the mountain side slowly working its way down into the bottom of the valley where the city of Tucson sits. On the south side of this town in a small lower class trailer park neighborhood a bedroom window has been cracked open by fifteen-year-old Rose who then takes in a big whiff of the fresh spring breeze. With a smile on her face she turned on the radio and started to sing and dance along to the music while debating on what to wear before doing her hair and finally concluding her routine with some light make up that included mascara, eyeliner, and lip gloss. What had started off as a great morning was unfortunately about to be flipped upside down by the simple sound of a car door being slammed shut from the driveway because for Rose this was the same as an alarm going off advising that trouble was headed her way. The music she had previously been pouring her heart out to has now faded into the background and has been replaced with the pounding of heart. All the happiness disappeared in the blink of an eye and has now become extreme anxiety resulting in sweaty palms, trembling legs as well as the feeling of having difficulty to breath. She quickly sat down in front of her bedroom mirror to attempt to pull herself together so that she could then mentally prepare herself for the nightmare she knew was about to walk through the front door.

The Weave of Dreams
Listening to Masterclass, Atlas drifted in and out of a daze as the train chugged along. Every few minutes he’d regain focus, retrieving a gem from the class but, deep down, he knew it was pointless. It wasn’t the lectures. He simply knew they were meant to help real artists. Not him, another failed cartoonist gone corporate lackey in order to pay the rent.

Where It Begins
With both hands clutched tightly to the wheel she drove the winding road to town, past the places she used to spend her days in a time before the world was forced to take a collective breath and sigh. She could smell the jasmine flowers along the park fence as she pulled into the parking lot. She grabbed her backpack from the passenger seat and with a push of her foot the door slammed shut, igniting a stream of tears.

The Little Black Book
The Little Black Book By : Jason Kenneth Tillett Tuesday March 2nd, 2021, it’s 11:59 pm EST I think I’m finally done. Three months of hard work and sleepless nights better pay-off. I’ve wrestled with storylines for months upon months, but decided to tell a true story, because it’s so much more fun. I know what you’re thinking, this story better be good! And now, without further ado, I give you The Little Black Book Story, filled with a little white lie, but mostly the truth.

It Happens Backwards
“So, tell me, how did you do it?” “Do what, Skye?” “Have you been a part of this conversation, Chris?” The voice was pointed, but riddled with a humor only they could share. He looked around, as if trying to find the other person in the room he must have been talking to this whole time. It was part of their game. What anything became when words left their mouths directed towards one another. He knew Chris had been paying attention; far more than most. To things like the sadness in a waitress’ eyes when her mind was elsewhere, or the momentary hesitation in the breath of someone on the verge of saying something before they chose not to.
