A Running Effect
Huh? Running helps you? Running is beneficial. Just google run and health - testimonials abound of how it has helped depression and even battle drug addiction. That must be good, right? Running has helped me in numerous ways, whether just out for a Sunday slog, a daily run, or even training for a race.

Starting the Resolutions early this upcoming year.
Winter Solstice has come and gone. It is a beautiful day of the year in the interior of Alaska, the last day where we lose daylight, and we gradually start to gain. It does not mean that we are magically getting warmer; strangely, our weather gets colder; however, the promise of sun, growth, and life is on the horizon.

Forced Discipline vs. Natural Discipline
I wasn't born in a rich family or country. As a small child, I didn't even know the word "poverty" existed. How could I know when I was born into a place where such opposites didn't exist? As I grew older and attended school I began to recognize when other kids had fancy things like colorful backpacks, beautiful pencils, pens, and so on. It was around this time that I started to understand the concept of "rich," how different it was from where I came from, and all the privileges that having lots of money entails. It was then that I knew that I wanted to be in that world and I studied hard to try to find a way to be part of it.

Permission
The sun kissed my skin as the waves licked the rocks around me. It felt as though I was sitting on my own personal granite-Titanic and the world was my oyster. It was in this very moment where I first began to feel my old exterior crack apart. As the pieces of my former self fell away and splashed into the ocean, the sunlight eased its way into me, taking up residence in all of the gaps that were left behind. Soon, I felt complete again, and the sun reflected off of the new me – the true me. It was then and there that I truly gave myself permission to be, me.

The Pressure to be Perfect
I felt the pressure to be perfect my entire life. Growing up, this unrealistic expectation squeezed me from all sides. Compressing me into the all-around, all-American girl. A shiny, unattainable gem. Forged in the fires of societal and parental expectation.

The battle for me
I sit in awkward silence. Looking at my phone, scrolling through pictures of people who are in other places, doing other things, anything to avoid eye contact with my neighbours. They, who too sit silently, who too glue their eyes to their phones, who too would like to be anywhere but here. I settle into the familiar tones of this room, the receptionist, answering queries in a hushed voice, the familiar whirr of the fan as it tries to cool the room, the shuffling in and out as each person is called upstairs, only to be replaced by a fresh body, another weary soul.

Tights, Tutus, and... Gray Hairs?. Top Story - December 2021.
A distant echo of squeals greets me as I open the front door. My heart leaps from my chest into my throat. I hesitate for a moment before starting my climb up the seemingly neverending flight of stairs.
