School Didn't Teach Me Anything Useful - Here's What I Really Need
Certainly, the school taught me basic skills such as discipline and reading, writing, and the following rules. But I didn't teach them to deal with failure, manage their finances, or understand it on their own. Most importantly, what shapes our lives every day was completely lacking in the curriculum.
Certainly, the school taught me basic skills such as discipline and reading, writing, and the following rules. But I didn't teach them to deal with failure, manage their finances, or understand it on their own. Most importantly, what shapes our lives every day was completely lacking in the curriculum.
It was up to my school that my school really started to study. And I wondered what if school actually taught me how to live? Here I hope you taught me instead.
1. How to Manage Money
No one has ever explained how a credit card actually works or why good credit is important. I haven't learned how to open a bank account, avoid payment loans, or plan my monthly budget.
Until my first job, I didn't even know the difference between total income and net income. Until then, I had already made financial mistakes - observations, late payments, loans for money that I couldn't repay.
Short courses on personal finance can make a big difference. Instead of solving abstract equations, we should be taught how to avoid saving, investing, debt and carefully build prosperity.
2. Emotional Intelligence and Mental Health
School taught me how to calm down in class, but not in a way to calm my mind when I was worried or overwhelmed. We were praised for our good grades, but we were punished for showing our weakness.
I wish someone had told us it was okay to not be wrong. This stress, depression, and anxiety is real and does not mean that they are weak.
We needed classes to deal with failure, regulate emotions, recognize burnout, and support each other without judgement. Education for mental health may have saved lives.
3. Communication and Relationships
I have never learned any actual communication skills other than the forced group project. We're not talking about how to say no, set healthy boundaries, or listen without interruption.
In the adult world, communication is the key to success - relationships, careers, and even parenting. However, the school trained us to follow instructions to not tell us the truth.
Imagine how different it would be if you heard of conflict resolution, positive things, and how to deal with toxic relationships from a young age.
4. Life and Career Skills
We have learned hours of old civilizations, but we don't have the time to write our resumes, submit taxes, or prepare for interviews.
No one has described a career that actually exists. We all went to college and worked the same way, without thinking about what suited our passions or our personality.
Schools should help students discover their interests and teach them how to survive and thrive in the real world. Not only can you get a job you can also build a meaningful life.
5. The critical thinking about memorizing.
For most of my school life, I was memorizing facts and not understanding ideas. I could tell you when I started World War I but didn't show you how to resolve the real conflict.
We must teach you how to ask questions, how to ask questions to standards, and how to think independently. It's not about choosing the right answer. It's about clarifying and navigating complex and troublesome situations.
6. Self-confidence and trust.
This is the most important lesson for everyone.
Schools did not give us time to explore our strengths, weaknesses, values, or dreams. We followed the notes instead of growth.
When we are taught to think about reflecting on our purpose, we leave school not only with knowledge but also with management. Trust is not based on test results but on understanding and acceptance.
Last thought
I don't say that school is useless. Educational questions. But our current system is outdated and separates itself from reality.
We must rethink what we teach and why. Treat your students like test machines, such as test machines, and stop preparing them for real life.
Tell us what tools we can help you manage our money, our feelings, our relationships, and our future. How can I survive outside the classroom? Because the actual test starts there.
