Strictly referring to the UK, as I have only traveled to France once and did not go out at all, it appears that people are too involved nowadays.
A co-worker was once complaining that she would not have a chance to stand up for herself if someone called her a "foreigner" because someone else will surely jump to say it is wrong to say that.
I do believe we focus on political correctness a bit too much, which I think stops us from observing important things happening around the world. For example, if you were reading such a debate in the comment section of a post on social media (we all do it sometimes), you would get caught up and maybe want to have your say as well when things seem to get out of hand, or maybe you would like to get your opinion out and heard . Also, you will have spent precious moments on something that doesn't even deserve your attention all that much; and while you did so, you missed the news about something big occurring in a different country perhaps or you indirectly passed on the opportunity to learn about an interesting fact.
Perhaps it really isn't a major loss, but it keeps you focused on what others should do or say so that they do not offend a group of people and suddenly start caring about other people's actions when in fact, yours are the only ones that matter.
I say, if it doesn't really hurt, let it go. So what if someone calls you a foreigner or immigrant? Would you risk getting into a physical fight over a word? Live and let live. The lack of a document identical to so many others' just doesn't seem worth the debate.
And if you really are having trouble forgetting a word and a slur, try and put a positive spin on it and find new strength in people's ignorance. Tell yourself you speak their language at a higher level, although it is not your mother tongue. Tell yourself you overcame your own condition, left your family behind and came to work here believing in a better you with a better life.
In all honesty, I prefer "foreigner" to "stranger", it makes me sound more exotic rather than somewhat peculiar. And just like that, I switched a slur or inappropriate comment into a beautiful thing, I avoided a confrontation that could have gone badly into a pep talk, I won a battle I never even had to be in.
Don't get me wrong, be politically correct, by all means, just don't let it be the only thing you strive to achieve in life. Especially at this time in history when everyone should be equally invested in overcoming hardship, you, dear reader, should see your power and your worth, you should be one to come together with everyone else and globally make a change for the better.
This is all coming from my living room, where I just want to do anything else but gather the courage to put together my standing coat rack I just received and which I don't really need. A perfect example of one focusing on something more important than the trivial and non-productive. And what better way to do so than share my thoughts here, among brothers and sisters from everywhere.
I truly believe in mankind, I am hopeful that good will win in the end and I know we all have the good fight within for ourselves and our children. I wish this could reach people all over the world and it motivates as many as possible to step outside the ego driven world we build around ourselves and see the panoramic view of the future.
