Observe

It's not only about external observation!

Stop! Don’t think, don’t think anything at all for a moment!

Oh, are you thinking about not thinking?

Ahh brain! Why do u do what I deny?

Brain: That’s me! you gotta accept it.

Well, peeps, we gotta control our thoughts before they control us!

And it all starts with observation, a topic that usually is either ignored or done unconsciously.

Even when we are not busy, our brain still is: busy thinking something, looking at something, planning on something, processing something et cetera et cetera (trying to be sophisticated).

But being mindful of what the brain is doing, is what we will discuss right now. But first, why do we need to be aware of random thoughts?

Being mindful of the things going on in our brain, we can be more aware of ourselves, and our way of thinking and it also helps us in becoming more emotionally stable. After all, if we can control something, then why not? Also, observing our thoughts is another kind of meditation. I believe that I don’t need to tell you the 109374 benefits of meditation!

Let’s observe! Sit idle for a moment and let thoughts flow, don’t let them bother you, just let them flow. Absorb them in their purest form. Don’t conclude anything, show no purpose. Because, if there is purpose, there is perception and you will start to ignore the ‘unrequired’ and conclude the results. That’s not what we are doing here.

Gaze at something, a plant, a house, a showpiece on your table, anything. Let the thoughts flow. Thoughts probably not even about the thing you’re looking at, thoughts about whatever.

The moment we try to find a purpose in our thoughts, the war begins. War of right and wrongs, the war giving you stress and making you tensed, the war, making you feel like there is urgency. Give the scattered mind, an open place to scatter. For once, let’s stop the fight with our brain and let it float where it wants to, for some time until it feels rejuvenated. Involve your different senses, gaze at things around you, hear the noise of vehicles or chirping of birds outside, and let your sense of smell work when you are gathering the mix of all smells in your surroundings, the food, the flowers, the perfumes, the candles. Pick up your favorite showpiece and feel it with your sense of touch. Have a candy or juice or whatever to activate your taste. All the senses are working together and our brain is mindful of all of them. It’s wonderful. It’s relaxing. It’s forgiving. Now make this your daily ritual of feeling relaxed. The same gaze, same sound, same smell, same taste, same touch every day you want to reset your brain. It works like magic.

“That much, just for self-introspection? that I could do by journalling, meditating, etc?”

-Self-introspection is not just observing the externals, the outputs, and the results. It is knowing oneself from within. Observe yourself in anger, irritation, frustration, stress, happiness, bliss, love, and all kinds of emotions. Knowing the result of our actions is good but knowing our way of thinking and acting in different situations is brilliant. The change begins from within and it all starts from observing.

Observe yourself and your surroundings whenever you can, while waiting at the red light, while walking in the park, while cooking or eating, while talking with someone, or while you are with your friends or lover. Notice the change in yourself once the surroundings around you change. But don’t confuse it with your identity. Behaving differently with different people is just a normal adaptation of the human brain. It’s not a multiple identity problem, don’t worry. Doing that slowly and regularly, you’ll notice the war within is over, you and your thoughts are one, and the brain is at ease.

Now that you know the drill, go ahead and befriend your opposing thoughts by giving them a place to float.

As a consistent reader of your work, I find myself improving every time I read your posts. They really help me out. I've also discovered a technique that suits me best. I go to a park, sit comfortably with my eyes closed, and focus on the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. Being close to nature feels amazing for me. Thank you for sharing yet another masterpiece. 💕

Really liked it :) Indeed, this observation of thoughts is a form of meditation. Another way of relaxing your mind is: thinking nothing, yes with what you began. Even for a few mins if you can almost completely clear your mind, you will be instantly refreshed. (I said almost bcuz you would still think about thinking nothing). Along with that, you can also visualize being in a vast ocean light with nothing around or maybe the scene inside Tanjiro's mind. You can go even further, what you mentioned as well, observe your senses. Start with deep breaths to the feeling you get entirely in your body.
