Meet “J.O.”

Meet “J.O.”

By Sarah BlessingPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

What’s your name and where are you from?

Jonathan Dandridge Scott is a rising hip-hop artist based in Chicago, IL, who performs under the stage name "J.O." Growing up, J.O. recalls his childhood being rough. However, he credits his optimism for being able to spark excitement and overcoming abnormal obstacles such as being raised around heavy drug use and poverty.

"The odds have always been against me, but I am a warrior.”

Why do you love what you do ?

My official success story began after recording my first track at my childhood friend’s house. I was at Chef Noriega's house recording in his closet, I was in eighth grade at the time. I remember bringing so much energy when I laid the track down. When I finished recording, I remember everybody being so excited. Everyone was so thrilled because everything came together so well, and it gave me a feeling that this was my destiny. Not only did it give me that feeling, it also boosted my confidence to the highest level when it came to writing and recording. I really make music that intertwines with my personal journey; music that listeners can feel and understand from a personal point of view. When someone can comprehend my music and what it stands for it gives me the perception that I am not the only one dealing with the type circumstances I give voice to in my music.

What makes you different?

What makes me different is that I’m a rapper and songwriter that can delve into many different sub genres within Hip-Hop/Rap, like with my song Wade in the Water. Wade in the Water featuring Kayla Davion has a soulful and hip-hop vibe that will give someone a sense of familiarity based off the song title and will also put you in a trance like state of mind. On the contrary, my single “Middle Man” brings a hardcore and quick to the punch rap vibe. I have plenty more examples that can showcase the diversity of my music, but you’ll have to listen to find out.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I see myself being a substantial and successful influencer within sync licensing and other parts of the music industry. In the future, I also see myself giving other aspiring young artists, like myself, a chance to follow their dreams by creating programs to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to be successful in the entertainment business. In addition, I anticipate owning real estate and establishing businesses that give back to the community.

What do you want to accomplish in life?

“The sky is the limit!” I believe I can do anything I set my mind to do. With that being said, I want to win awards for my music, like a Grammy, write screenplays that portray real life situations, and give back to the community I grew up in. I want to accomplish giving back to my community by promoting financial literacy through programs for all different ages, but especially our youth. It’s very important to me to educate our youth.

What do you bring to your industry?

I bring a fresh and unique sound that embodies realism, to the extent that anyone who listens to my music can envision and understand the picture I’m painting with my lyrics.

What do you want to be remembered by?

I want to be remembered as being a truthful person who stands on business, while never letting obstacles impede on my destiny. I want my story to inspire people from all walks of life, not just others like me. In other words, I want to be unforgettable.
