Who Is Jane Eyre?
The main character, Jane Eyre, is a poor orphan girl who grows up facing many hardships. From a very young age, Jane is treated unfairly. She’s strong-minded and speaks up for herself, even as a child, which makes her stand out.
At the age of 10, Jane is sent to Lowood School, a strict boarding school for girls. Life at Lowood is harsh. The students are punished often, given very little food, and kept in cold, uncomfortable conditions. But Jane doesn’t give up. She finds a good friend, Helen Burns, who teaches her patience and kindness. Sadly, Helen dies young from illness, which leaves a deep impact on Jane.
Over time, Jane becomes a teacher at Lowood, but she dreams of something more. She wants to explore the world and find her own path in life. So, she leaves the school and applies for a job as a governess a teacher for a child in a private home.
Thornfield Hall and Mr. Rochester
Jane gets a job at Thornfield Hall, a large, mysterious house owned by Mr. Edward Rochester. She is hired to teach his ward, a little French girl named Adèle. Rochester is a complex man he is smart, mysterious, sometimes gruff, but also kind in his own way.
As time passes, Jane and Mr. Rochester grow close. They enjoy talking with each other, and despite their different social positions, they fall in love. Rochester proposes to Jane, and she is overjoyed. But on their wedding day, Jane discovers a terrible secret: Rochester is already married. His wife, Bertha Mason, is mentally ill and kept hidden in the attic of Thornfield.
Heartbroken and devastated, Jane refuses to become his mistress and runs away, choosing her morals and self-respect over her love for him.
Jane’s Journey of Self-Discovery
After leaving Thornfield, Jane wanders alone, poor and hungry, until she is taken in by kind strangers the Rivers family. She later finds out that they are actually her cousins, and that she has inherited a fortune from an uncle. Jane shares the money with them and finally finds a sense of belonging.
One of her cousins, St. John Rivers, wants her to marry him and go with him as a missionary. But Jane knows she does not love him, and she refuses. She realizes that true love and freedom must go together.
Jane then hears a mysterious voice calling her Rochester’s voice. She returns to Thornfield and finds the house burned down. Bertha had set the house on fire and died in the flames. Rochester tried to save her but was injured and lost his sight.
Despite everything, Jane still loves him deeply. She chooses to stay with Rochester, and now they are equals both changed by life, and both truly in love. They marry, and the story ends with a sense of peace and happiness.
