In a world where architecture often emphasizes scale and spectacle, Raquel Thompson believes in something deeper — creating spaces that serve people, respect nature, and tell meaningful stories. As Principal Architect at Front House Design Studio in Barbados, Raquel has earned recognition for her creative vision, technical expertise, and commitment to sustainable design.

In this interview-style feature, she opens up about her journey, her design philosophy, and her belief that architecture has the power to shape not only skylines but also lives.

The Beginning of a Vision

Q: Raquel, what first inspired you to pursue architecture?

Raquel: Growing up in Barbados, I was always fascinated by how the built environment interacts with nature. I loved observing how light moved through spaces, how breeze flowed through homes, and how buildings became part of the landscape rather than competing with it. I realized early on that architecture could combine my love for art and my curiosity for problem-solving — it was the perfect balance of creativity and logic.

Her early exposure to Caribbean architecture — rich in cultural character and environmental sensitivity — continues to influence her work today.

Education and Growth

Q: Your academic path is quite impressive. Could you tell us a bit about it?

Raquel: Absolutely. I began my studies at Barbados Community College, earning my Associate’s Degree in Architecture. That experience gave me the technical foundation I needed. Later, I pursued my Bachelor of Architecture at Howard University in Washington, D.C. — a transformative experience. Howard is where I learned to think critically about design and its social impact. I was honored to be recognized by the Golden Key Honor Society and Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society. Those years shaped my belief that architecture can and should improve people’s quality of life.

Raquel’s time at Howard helped her view architecture not just as a career but as a calling — a discipline capable of driving positive change.

Professional Journey

Q: After your studies, how did your professional path evolve?

Raquel: I started my career at Tony Brooks Architects, where I spent more than a decade — first as an Architectural Assistant and later as an Associate Architect. It was a formative period. I worked on diverse projects and learned the importance of collaboration, precision, and patience.

In 2020, I founded Front House Design Studio. Becoming Principal Architect gave me the freedom to align my projects with my core values — sustainability, creativity, and functionality.

Her firm now leads several projects that blend modern design with environmental awareness, reinforcing her belief that architecture should serve both humanity and nature.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Q: Sustainability is a recurring theme in your work. Why is it so important to you?

Raquel: Because architecture doesn’t exist in isolation. Every design decision affects the environment — from material choice to energy use. As architects, we have a responsibility to build in ways that minimize harm and maximize benefit. Sustainable design isn’t just about green technologies; it’s about designing smarter, using what’s available, and respecting the natural context.

Raquel integrates passive cooling systems, natural ventilation, and local materials into her designs, ensuring her projects are both beautiful and environmentally conscious.

Challenges and Triumphs

Q: What has been one of your biggest challenges as a woman architect and business leader?

Raquel: Architecture remains a male-dominated field in many ways, but that’s changing. The challenge isn’t just being heard — it’s staying consistent, professional, and true to your vision. I’ve learned that credibility grows from results. When you deliver quality, clients and collaborators listen. I’m proud to see more women joining and leading the field today.

Her leadership has made Front House Design Studio a trusted name in Caribbean architecture — one that values integrity, inclusivity, and innovation.

Advice for the Next Generation

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring architects and designers?

Raquel: Be curious. Ask questions. Don’t rush the process of learning. Architecture is not just about drawing plans — it’s about understanding people and places. Be open to collaboration and stay grounded in purpose. Most importantly, never lose sight of why you started.

Raquel also emphasizes that the best architects are lifelong students of the world — always observing, adapting, and evolving.

Looking Ahead

Q: What’s next for you and Front House Design Studio?

Raquel: I want to continue expanding our portfolio while pushing for even greater sustainability. We’re exploring projects that focus on community resilience and eco-conscious living. My goal is to show that responsible design can be both elegant and accessible.

Her long-term vision is clear: to redefine how the Caribbean — and the world — approaches design in the face of climate and social challenges.

Closing Thoughts

In conversation, Raquel Thompson exudes a calm confidence and deep sense of purpose. Her words reveal not only an accomplished architect but also a visionary determined to build a better future through design.

As she continues her journey, one truth remains constant — Raquel’s architecture isn’t just about buildings. It’s about creating spaces that nurture connection, inspire sustainability, and remind us that thoughtful design can truly change the world.
