By now I’m sure most people have seen it but for those who haven’t I’ll do my best not to spoil it.

Perhaps you’ve seen the trailer then you might atleast have a good sense of what it’s about.

For the first time in really quite a while since the start of the Pandemic, I was able to sit and binge all the way through a series called, Maid

I found myself completely compelled by it from the very beginning. It was very heavy on the emotions as well. Even if you never personally encountered issues as the characters face. It was very gripping just because the story and and performances were top notch.

Maid tells the story of a young mother named Alex who decides to leave an abusive relationship along with her adorable daughter in hopes of providing a better life. She finds herself in a shelter and quickly finds work as a Maid. Hence the title.

Each episode left me in tears as I thought it would, but not to the level I expected. There were some very triggering moments in this show that just had me shaking a few times. Those who have dealt with any type of abuse I’m almost sure can relate as well.

There were times when it felt as though Alex just kept hitting walls at every turn. She never gave up. She received help and then also pretty harsh dealings. What really impressed me was the truthful journey she was on because it highlighted the good, bad, and very ugly repercussions of these situations.

There were some very Interesting characters in this as well such as Paula played by Andie McDonnell who plays Alex’s Mom and also the actual mother of the Actress who portrays Alex.

Their chemistry is undeniable and very beautiful to watch. There is also a client that Alex cleans who becomes an unlikely ally for her towards the end.

For me, I found this series wholesome. It had some good lighthearted moments in it to keep it from going too dark but didn’t try to really make very light of this subject matter.

It’s just watching some of your life experience play out on screen but seeing it through a different lens. It’s seeing a perspective of a courageous woman, who even in her darkest moments finds hope through the love she has for her child. And herself.

One takeaway I got from this is that there women out there who continue to go back to these situations and was highlighted a little bit in the show. It’s true though there was a haunting line where one character mentioned that it often takes victims about half a dozen tries to succeed in leaving their abusive partner. That really struck me. But it also gave me hope. Hope for other women still stuck in these situations.

I hope that every woman/ or man ( who can also be victims) finds the strength to love themselves and their child enough to finally decide enough is enough. To realize there are resources and safe places to sleep at night out there until you find your footing. There will absolutely be days where you might want to give up and go back, because it’s just easier to do that sometimes than to keep going. You might find yourself making mistakes, but they are not going to break you. You will become better and stronger because of it. Hold on to the love ( not your relationship) of yourself and your goals.
