How Come That Idiot Is Rich… And I’m Not?

(A Reflection from the Mountainside Coaching Lodge)

By OdebPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

The sun was just cracking over the misty ridge when James dropped the question like a stone in my quiet morning.

"Coach… how come that idiot is rich… and I’m not?"

I looked up from my steaming cup of ginger tea, watching the clouds shift like thoughts trying to form. We were seated on a wooden deck overlooking a pine-draped valley, where silence had weight and answers found space to speak.

I didn’t laugh. Didn’t smirk. I’ve heard that question before—too many times.

“Tell me more about this ‘idiot,’” I said, keeping my tone even.

James leaned back, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. “He was the class clown. Couldn't even hold a proper sentence back then. Failed most of his courses. Now he owns three businesses, just bought a condo in Dubai, and I… I’m here, still trying to figure things out.”

I nodded slowly, letting the mountain air carry his frustration out into the open.

“Funny thing about idiots,” I said. “Sometimes they’re just people who dared to believe they didn’t know it all.”

He blinked. “Come again?”

I set the cup down and turned to him.

“That ‘idiot’ probably decided early on that being teachable was more valuable than being impressive. He didn’t pretend. He asked dumb questions. Took advice. Got a mentor. Learned. Failed. Learned again. Followed instructions even when they didn’t make sense at the time. He didn’t waste time proving he was smart—he spent it improving.”

James sat still. The wind stirred the trees below us like truth nudging old habits.

“You know what you did instead?” I said gently.

“You built walls out of ego. Believed that intelligence alone would unlock life. You mocked new ideas. You rolled your eyes at people trying things differently. You called them ‘lucky’ or ‘crazy’ or ‘sellouts.’ All while you analyzed the perfect moment… that never came.”

He didn’t speak. But his shoulders softened, just slightly.

“Let me tell you something powerful,” I continued.

“Old keys never open new doors. You can’t fix a broken life with the same mindset that broke it.”

A bird flitted past the railing. Somewhere far below, a river hummed like an ancient mantra.

“You want wealth?” I asked. “Stop chasing security. Stop waiting for guarantees. Start thinking upside-down. Forget what you were taught about success. The old rules—work hard, save more, get a better job—those are designed to keep you in check, not set you free.”

He looked up now. Curious.

“Money,” I said, “isn’t magic. It’s movement. It’s investing wisely. Working intentionally. Being patient. Caring for your decisions. Letting your returns breathe and grow. And most of all—it’s about the kind of mind you bring to the game.”

James ran a hand through his hair. “So what you’re saying is…”

“I’m saying,” I interrupted, “You’re not broke because you’re dumb. You’re broke because you’re stubborn. You’re not stuck because of others. You’re stuck because you think you’ve already figured it out.”

His lips parted, but no words came. The truth had landed.

“You’re not lacking skill. You’re lacking surrender,” I said.

He stared at the valley. “That idiot… took action, didn’t he?”

“Massive action,” I replied. “While you were perfecting your plan, he was building his mess into momentum.”

The silence returned, but it was different now. Full of clarity. Of shift.

“You’ve got two choices,” I said finally, rising to my feet.

“Keep clinging to pride. Or let go, get curious, and move.”

James stood too. There was something new in his eyes—humility wrapped in hunger.

“You ready?” I asked.

He nodded.

We walked down the trail toward the future he had just decided to meet.

Because in the end, life doesn’t reward the one who knows the most,

It rewards the one who learns, listens, and dares to move.
