Have you met you before?

How well do you really know yourself

By Charlie MackePublished 6 years ago 3 min read

How much do you understand yourself?

Do you ever take a moment to step back and look at yourself for an outside perspective, understand why you do things or how you think or how you do things?

I think it takes a certain skill to do this, and one you can learn (but not easily). To do this exercise efficiently, you have to be able to step back from yourself and look at who you are and the things that make you you, from a total different perspective. Imagine watching yourself through someone elses eyes for a day, that's what I mean.

Why do I ask this?

In order to know how to get to where you want to be, you need to know where you are, now. Using the typical sat-nav analogy, you need a start point and an end point so it can give you the correct directions. You also need to know your means of travel, by car, or bus, train, walk or cycle. Depending on that, will determine your route to get there. How does that compare with understanding yourself? That links in with how you think and the impact that has on how you do things.

Say you work in retail, a job you really do not like or want to do. Instead, you want to become a entrupenuer and set up your own company selling a program on how to do graphics design. Those two things are so different, the person doing each is also equally different. The person in retail is not the same person whos teaching people how to do graphics design, the retailor has to become that person. So into the sat-nav goes the retailor, where you are now. The destination is the entrupenuer. Ok so now means of travel, different methods take different routes and different times due to speed and how direct said route is. The difference between retailor and entreupenuer isn't just job or title, but who they are and their mindset. To become one you must change who you are, but by know who you are currently allows you to judge how much you need to change. You might have it in you to do it quite easily, you know how you want to set up, you know who you want to help/serve, you already have the skill required to do this, all you need to do is start and complete the transition from one to the other. This means method of travel will be faster or more direct, i.e, train. If however, your mindset currently is that you don't want to dedicate much time to it, you make excuses as to why it will take a long time and you are not sure how to set about doing what you want to achieve. This means you need to change your mindset, undo who you are so you can form into a new one, someone who dedicates themselves and doesn't make excuses, does what needs to be done to achieve. To alter your mind and become someone new takes time, and isn't a direct route. So that method would be more like walking to your destination. Walking might take longer, but it will take even longer if you are unsure how to travel and try multiple methods that are fair less direct, and you won't know the better ways to help yourself if you get lost or need to change direction.

Take a moment to assess yourself, learn more about who you are and how you think. Don't be afraid of other peoples opinions if they are constructive, they truly have different perspectives of you and they probably know something about yourself that you don't. You have to want to learn more to be able to, else you jut become ignorant and choose what you want to listen to, forming a biased opinion of yourself and only see half the picture. I believe the things you will be able to learn and achieve will improve dramatically as you enable your ability to learn, understand more about you so you can learn more efficiently. Take some time, learn more about who you are so you can become the person you want to be.
