From the perspective of a person suffering depression, such as myself, there are many days and moments in which it feels impossible to believe that the future can in any way be exciting, and filled with great success and happiness. Depression is usually triggered by a series of circumstances and events in which we continually experience hurt, sadness, emotional pain, unhappiness, failure, and/or dissatisfaction. There quite often is one primary cause behind what leads us into depression, but that unhappiness becomes compounded as we continue to focus on the negatives in other aspects of our life also. It literally feels like everything is against us, that no one truly cares about us, and that there is nothing worthwhile to get out of bed for each morning. Life is just not in any way enjoyable or pleasurable. What's worse is, we just can't see any sunshine on the horizon, no hope or promise that our circumstances are going to improve. The future seems grim. It's like we are boxed up and unable to do anything about it either. We feel trapped, so we sit tight and wait in hope, for life to finally relieve us of all the pressure and pain, so we can then rediscover happiness once again. Sadly, all we seem to encounter are further issues and pain though. Those with depression may relate to this when I say that every time it feels like we are getting back on track mentally, and we are trying to uplift ourselves, something else always tends to go wrong, and we end up back at square one, all depressed and miserable again. We are frustrated that those without depression, or any other mental illness, cannot understand our thoughts, feelings, emotions, suffering, and pain that we are going through, often treated by them like we are just weak, that we are just making excuses, and we are attention seekers, when that's so far from the truth.
As someone who has invested so much time into personal development and mindset training, over the past four years, I can honestly tell you that depression certainly is real, and it certainly is a massive struggle to overcome. I have learnt that as much as anti-depressants and psychologist appointments are beneficial to helping us deal with our mental illness, the sole solution in returning to happiness lies in our own hands. I know full well, just how hard it is to maintain a positive mindset, when it feels like everything is constantly going wrong. In the space of just two months, my life has just been turned upside down. I am battling the most difficult period of my life currently, and there's no sign of these current circumstances easing up any time soon. It's taken me right back into the depths I found myself in a decade ago, except this time, things are far worse. The simple thing is though, I have a choice. I can wallow in misery, feel sorry for myself, and continue to believe that the world is against me, or I can use this time of adversity as a massive opportunity to define my future, to learn, to grow, to mature, and to strengthen myself. I can choose to focus on all that's going wrong in my life, or I can choose to focus on all the blessings in life that I should be grateful for. I can choose to reminisce over the happy moments and memories of the past, sitting around mindlessly wishing I could go back in time and relive those days once again, or I can accept the past has been and gone, that I am now in control of the present, and I have the ability to shape my future.
I often reflect on the past, as the constant images of happy and enjoyable moments swirl through my head, leaving me to think about some wonderful memories. It brings a temporary smile to my face, until the reality sets in again that those days are behind me. We all reflect on great memories we have made, that's only natural, but the problem for me, and undoubtedly many others worldwide, is I find myself firmly believing that the best times of my life are indeed behind me. It honestly saddens me thinking about this. The thing is, how do I know the best times are behind me? How I can tell myself with such conviction, that the future won't have even better moments ahead? Sure, I am suffering and hurting right now, but anyone who has ever achieved success, happiness, and fulfillment in life, also had to deal with immense adversity, failure, rejection, hurt, pain, and loss, before they ever achieved such rewards, and we are talking years of it too, not just weeks or months. I am no philosopher. I cannot predict the future, nor guarantee that the future will be better or worse than my past. What I do know is, that I have the power and ability to design and shape my own future. I have control over my own mindset whether I choose to be positive or negative. I am in control of my own destiny, as indeed you are with your own. I mentioned that those who are depressed often feel like they are trapped in their current situation and circumstances, and any changes they make may even create a worse situation for themselves. The reality is, is that life makes circumstances extremely uncomfortable and miserable for us, because we are simply not where we should be, or because we are with someone whom we shouldn't be with. Life wants us to be constantly learning, growing, and developing ourselves, and if we are not doing that, it makes things uncomfortable for us. You are never trapped, you are only ever trapped by your fear of making changes, and situations and circumstances never improve unless we make these changes. It doesn't mean we won't encounter more adversity, failure, and challenge, following these changes, but that's where we just need to work hard and focus on what we desire in life, the goals in which we desire to achieve. Keep changing things up, keep trialing new actions, keep working hard, keep persevering, and keep on being patient, because with the right attitude and behaviors, success and happiness is possible.
So whilst our past may either have been good or bad, and our present is either good or bad, neither of these now matter, right at this very moment. What matters now is our future! That's right, even if negativity is swamping you right now, it doesn't mean you cannot start working on shaping the future of your desire. If you drop a carton of milk on the floor, and some milk spills out on, you don't just leave it there and go out to buy another carton of milk. You quickly pick up the carton to prevent further milk from spilling it, you preserve what's left in the carton to still use, and then you work on cleaning up the mess. It's not something you may enjoy, nor want to have to do, but you know you have to do it, otherwise the milk remains on the floor, slowly evaporates, and starts to stink the house out. Let this time of hardship and adversity provide you with the determination and drive to overcome all that's going wrong for you right now, by focusing your attention on your goals for the future. Let it consume you, and redirect your focus. Concentrate only on what you can control, not what you can't! You will be okay, because you are strong, you are courageous, you are resilient, and you have greatness within you. This period of time may become the pivotal moment which catapults you to success, and a total life transformation, but you need to break the shackles of negativity, pessimism, and hopelessness. You have this wonderful opportunity to create a future like you never imagined for yourself, one in which is filled with success, happiness, fulfillment, and prosperity. Get excited!
If you continually believe the future is going to be bleak, and filled with more unhappiness, with nothing to look forward to, then guess what? It will indeed work out that way. But if you get excited about your future, you start being proactive on working towards your goals, you start engaging in mindset training and personal development, and you start focusing on gratitude and positivity, then the law of attraction has proven that you will indeed attract that positivity into your life. It's about focus, belief, and resilience. Doesn't it excite you to think that you have the power and capability to create the future you want? Doesn't it excite you to think that you can obtain happiness, success, and prosperity in life? You can't just sit around hoping and wishing for it to happen though, you have to make it happen! Even with the further setbacks, failures, and challenges ahead, just keep going! Your time will come, and when that time comes, the only regret you will have is wishing that you had acted upon focusing on designing your future earlier. Whether you are suffering from depression or any other mental illness, or whether you are just downright unhappy and unsatisfied with your life, then now is the perfect time to make some positive changes in your life, and get excited about what the future holds for you, because you can achieve whatever you set your mind to achieve!
