Wreath Making: The New Calm

By Queen BeaPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

It was the beginning of CORVD-19 Pandemic when I discovered the joy and art of making wreaths. It is very therapeutic. It can also be helpful in calming the mind, overcoming anxiety, and just being at peace. Yes, making wreaths became my special time my happiness.

I became so passionate about it that I just I wanted to share my happiness with others. Unlike some hobbies you do not have to drive or leave home to do this. Also you can do it alone, with someone else or a group.

Since starting this hobby I have made many wreaths for many occasions: Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Spring, Fall, Birthday Parties, Sororities, New Born Celebration, Silver Anniversaries, Welcome Home, and St. Patrick’s Day.

Wreaths are fun to make and give. Wreath giving can brighten someone’s day, classroom, or home. At one time wreaths were used as part of wedding rituals.

There are countless themes and uses for wreaths. I love to share my love for this craft. But not everyone is crafty or feel the need to be crafty. This is where wreath giving wreaths comes in. There is something about giving and bringing a smile to someone’s face. It is uplifting to the receiver and giver.

I was surprised how much I liked the idea of making wreaths. I didn’t know how the idea popped into my head; but it was one of the most soothing and comforting ideas I have ever experienced besides writing. Thinking back, it was probably sparked because of my love for looking at homes. A lot of the curb appeal of those homes came from the doors, and the different statements the wreaths hanging on those doors made.

My son is very crafty so I went to him with the idea of how I could learn to make wreaths. He told me to look on the internet and watch some tutorials, and then get your own ideas. He even watched some tutorials and worked along with me in the beginning.

Picking out things for a fall theme that expressed my individuality was amazing. After buying the scissors, mesh, ribbons, wires, forms, pumpkins, leaves and different ornaments I knew I had found my niche. Joy was when ever I picked up my wreath making materials and started crafting.

Wreath making was then and is now very meaningful to me. It depicts a time of uncertainty in my life that I found peace in the middle of a storm so to speak. Wreaths come in many shapes. My favorite is the circular ones. The old song about” let the circle be unbroken’’ just stuck to me at that time because of what was going on globally. As I approached each day, it was like oh say can you really see how different cultures no differences matter because there is and should be unity. Our experiences are all the same throughout the nation. My hope was that united we could come to solutions, this one and every other problem from now on. My wreaths are unity wreaths. They are the overflow of the peace, calm, serenity, and warmth, and happiness I feel when making them.

Wreaths have been around throughout history. They first represented victory, everlasting love, faith and numerous other things. Being that they were first worn on the head I see why it started and why it ended. When I first got started making wreaths I bought too many ornaments. Then I started using things I already had. I was amazed at how many natural items could be used. The beautiful green leaves, the everchanging colors of fall leaves, dried flowers, berries, pinecones, shells from beaches all along with a mountain of things are accessible. I can imagine that the wreaths which they were called crowns a long time ago could had become t a little too much. But they have never lost their popularity. They can be put anywhere a person chooses.
