What does it mean to live a fulfilled life? Do we even know what the feeling of fulfillment is like, or an even bigger question, do we even really know what fulfillment is? Fulfillment is defined as "the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted", but it is also defined as "satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one's potential". Perhaps we have achieved a feat or goal in the past, and it has indeed brought us happiness and satisfaction, but has it really provided us lifelong fulfillment? Has it transformed our life, or was it just a personal accomplishment that delivered us short term satisfaction and happiness? If we look at the last four words of the definition, we would identify the greatest gap as to why so many people live unfulfilled lives. How many people honestly make the effort to fully develop their own potential? One thing is for sure, it's an extremely low percentage of people. I believe it starts with our childhood, as the way in which we are taught by our parents, teachers, and society, we are influenced to believe that our years of education are basically from the day we are born, through until our late teens/early twenties, once we complete school and university. The encouragement, support, and urgency, for us to continue receiving education in life, completely stops. No longer do we sit in a classroom listening to a teacher feed us with education and information, plus our parents begin to take a back seat in telling us what to do as we enter into adulthood, and instead allow us more independence and freedom. The truth is, the real education in life starts from when we actually leave school and university, because that's when we truly start to experience life, which then gives us the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop.
So how do we continue to grow and develop without education? The simple answer, we don't. We can't continue to grow, develop, and mature, in life without education. The thing is, we also struggle to succeed and progress in life, when we don't continually work on bettering ourselves through growing and developing. It's up to us to become accountable for our own education, and the way in which we do that is through experience. We need to be engaging in a variety of different actions and activities, but not those in which we are comfortable, because then we aren't learning something new. We need to be stepping out of our comfort zone, be taking risks, and be engaging ourselves in ongoing hard work, pain, and arduous tasks. It's about embracing failure, rejection, and adversity, so we test ourselves to continually find solutions and overcome trials. Our true potential is revealed when we find the strength and resilience to continually overcome adversity, whilst remaining patient in working towards achieving our goal. When we have the will power and drive to continue exposing ourselves to discomfort, all in the aid of achieving our goals and striving for happiness and satisfaction in life, we push ourselves to the limit, and in doing so, whilst resisting the temptation of quitting, we reveal the characteristics, behavior, and attitude, hidden within us. Right there is us reaching our potential. When we push ourselves through all the barriers for years on end, having had to deal with so much pain and failure, we showcase the true potential we have within us. The satisfaction gained from completing such a journey, to achieve life transforming success, that is where we find fulfillment.
No one is going to help us reach our full potential. People can motivate us, guide us, support us, and encourage us, but it's up to us to step out of our comfort zone, engage in the actions that are uncomfortable, face the failures and adversities head on, and work our butt off to achieve the success and goals we desire. We will never know or reveal our true potential if we don't allow ourselves the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone continuously. The journey is a tough one, there's no shying away from that, and part of the education we need to help us mentally on the journey, is to engage in personal development training. Each day we need to be spending time reading motivational books, or working through an online personal development course, or watching motivational videos, anything that can help strengthen our mindset, and help us with emotional control. We need the mental tools that can help us overcome failure and adversity, that can help us maintain the focus on our goal, whilst remaining positive. The personal development material is the theory side of it, which then compliments the practical side of it, where we get stuck into those uncomfortable decisions and actions. Establish a clear goal, and one that is life transforming, one that drives you, and one that you have such a strong emotional attachment to, that you will always have the strength to resist the temptation to quit. Then be prepared to make sacrifices, make some tough decisions, and get stuck into some character testing and uncomfortable actions. At the end of this journey, not only does success, happiness, and satisfaction, lie there waiting for you, but also fulfillment. Don't allow your potential to lie dormant and go to waste, force yourself out of your comfort zone so you can discover fulfillment yourself!
