6 Ways To Make Your First $100 Writing Online
The only advice you need to know about making money writing online
Writing can be a great way to earn some extra income along with your job, but what's even better at writing is that you can make a full-time career out of it and never have to worry about a 9–5 job again.
The writing community is competitive, so you're going to have to write your heart out if you want to get recognized as a noteworthy writer. Platforms like Medium and Vocal Media are two options beginner writers use the most to generate a successful career in writing because of how much of an opportunity there is within these writing platforms.
When I first started writing, I didn't think I was going to make money right away, and I didn't even know the first step of how. After months of work and research, I've finally made my first $100 writing and I'm going to show you how you can, too.
C. S. Lewis wasn't lying when she said you can make anything by writing.
5 Ways To Make Money Writing
1. Affiliate marketing
It doesn't matter how big or small your account, anyone can become an affiliate marketer. Affiliate marketing has proven to be one of the best ways to get paid from blogs or videos. Simply get your own affiliate link for a website/program and promote it. If people click on the link and actually buy something, you'll earn a certain percentage of the commission.
The next step is to start joining affiliate marketing programs and choosing which offers you want to promote. I recommend promoting affiliate marketing programs that are in the same niche as you and that you know are worth the money.
By sharing those links on your blog, you have a chance to earn extra money on which blogs and can eventually lead to a way of passive income.
My favorite program is the Amazon Associates program, but you can research numerous affiliate programs, write them all down on Docs with your own custom affiliate links, and share it. The rest of the process is to rinse and repeat until the sales start adding up.
2. Join other writing platforms
You're reading this on Vocal, but did you know other platforms pay for your writing? My second platform is Vocal Media. I use it to copy and paste articles from my Medium profile in hopes of getting more eyes on it. Vocal Media also has a subscription every month for $9.99 that gives you the challenge to compete for money.
Newsbreak can also be a good alternative method to make money writing online. While I only have one story on Newsbreak, I've been studying other writers' reviews on them.
One of my favorite articles is a comparison of all three of the platforms by Zulie Rane. This really helped me prioritize which writing platform is the most important when it comes to how they pay their creators.
3. Freelance
You can start by creating an account on Fiverr or Upwork (I'm doing both to get the most money I can) and start looking for jobs. You can also sell your writing services post a new gig/job for a certain price.
Best Gigs for Writers:
- -Ghostwriting
- -Song/script-writing
- -Translation
- -Proofreading
- -Editing
Most writers found clients through Upwork. It's important to know that you won't be getting paid $50 for each gig. If it was that much, I'm sure more people would be doing this, but people don't have the patience. They quit their jobs and freelance for pennies until they just quit freelance writing because of the money.
You need to work to get what you want. Your first gig should pay you less than 5 dollars. Patience is the issue, writers want to make big-time money freelancing right away and I totally get that but you have to show your clients that you are worth more than they're paying you and you do that by making spectacular content and filling their needs.
4. Make as much content as you can
Don't expect to make any sort of cash if you only have a couple of stories. Most writers on Medium don't even make good money until they've published over 100 stories, so what does this mean for you?
Write, obviously. Writers write and that's how they get paid. One or two blog posts isn't enough you have to use your writing platforms as a discography of your best work. If you don't give any effort to your content, then no one is going to read your stories it's as simple as that.
This goes with any platform. Whether it's content writing on freelance writing websites or content creating videos on YouTube and Instagram, make sure to try your hardest on anything you want to put out in the public eye.
5. Be ready mentally
Even though research proves that writing is key to improving your mental health, you still have to take a mental approach to your dedication to writing.
If you get exhausted and overwork yourself, then you're going to go through writer's block and suffer many burnouts along the way so you have to prepare yourself mentally for the amount of work you eventually are going to have to put in if you want to become a successful writer.
I like to set myself goals every month on my writing progress. I look at my goals every day and say them in my head 3 times until I have my head in the game. If you don't have passion for your writing and you simply just want to write for the money, then you might as well just stop writing. Millions of writers are passionate about what they do.
Writing is not free money. If you put your mind into your writing and show consistency, you'll eventually see results.
6. Social media
I hate to break it to you, but social media is taking over the world.
And if you want viewers to turn into followers, then go on social media and make a writing portfolio account where you share your writing and communicate with other writers. Social media is the perfect way to meet new people who have the same interest as you, and there are tons of writers that roam around social media looking to share their work.
I see most of the writers on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If you're on your own little island on social media, then you won't be able to make new connections with writers.
You're going to wanna post content on those platforms as well. While it may seem like so much work to worry about posting content on many networking platforms and websites, the more you do it, the easier it'll be.
I recommend using social media to promote your stories, but don't constantly spam it with promotions. Show personality, you might make your own brand with social media and it's important to niche down and figure out what you want to do and how to make money. The more people see your writing, the more money you earn, and social media is perfect for traffic.
Thank you for reading. I wish you good luck on your journey to your first $100. It'll be a slow and steady process, but as long as you're mentally prepared and prioritize the content you post, then you'll be seeing the big bucks in no time.
