I Wish Someone Had Told Me This Before

I spent years feeling like I was running in circles.

I tried to be what everyone wanted.

I chased things that didn’t make me happy.

I stayed silent when I should’ve spoken up.

And all that time, I thought I was doing what you’re “supposed” to do. But deep down, I felt lost. I kept wondering: Why does life feel so hard? Why am I still struggling, even though I’m trying so hard?

It took me years—and a lot of mistakes—to learn these 5 simple but powerful lessons. I wish I’d known them sooner. Maybe they can help you now, so you don’t waste as much time feeling stuck like I did.

🌱 1. You Don’t Need Everyone’s Approval to Be Happy

For so long, I thought if people liked me, I’d feel good about myself. I said yes when I wanted to say no. I hid parts of myself so no one would judge me.

But here’s the truth:

Even if everyone else approves of you, it won’t matter if you don’t.

The more I tried to please others, the more I lost myself. Real happiness started when I stopped asking, “Do they like me?” and started asking, “Do I like me?”

If you’re living for other people’s praise, you’ll always feel empty. Live for your own peace.

🌿 2. Rest Is Not a Reward—It’s a Requirement

I used to feel guilty for resting. If I wasn’t being “productive,” I thought I was lazy. So I kept pushing, working, forcing myself to keep going—until I burned out.

What I learned (the hard way) is this:

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Rest isn’t something you earn after you’ve done enough. It’s something you need to do so you can keep going, keep creating, keep showing up.

If you wait until you’re exhausted to rest, it’s already too late.

🌸 3. Small Steps Matter More Than Big Plans

I used to believe I needed a perfect plan before I could start. I’d wait until I felt ready. I’d wait for the right time, the right tools, the right motivation.

But while I waited, nothing changed.

Here’s what I finally realized:

Big change doesn’t come from big plans—it comes from small steps, taken again and again.

Write one sentence.

Take a 5-minute walk.

Say no to one thing that drains you.

Those tiny actions build up. And before you know it, you’re living a different life.

🌞 4. People Will Disappoint You—But That Doesn’t Mean You Should Stop Trusting

I’ve been hurt. Let down. Betrayed. And for a while, I built walls around myself. I thought it would keep me safe.

But those walls kept out the good as much as the bad.

Not everyone will stay. Not everyone will treat you right. But some people will—and you have to let them in.

Trust is scary. But loneliness is harder.

🌻 5. You’re Allowed to Change Your Mind (About Anything)

I stayed in jobs, relationships, and situations far too long because I was afraid to admit I wanted something else. I thought changing my mind meant I was weak or unreliable.

But life changes. You change. Your dreams change. And that’s okay.

Changing your mind isn’t failing. It’s growing.

It means you’re listening to your heart, your needs, your truth. And that’s the bravest thing you can do.

💬 Final Thoughts: Learn It Sooner, Live Lighter

If I could go back, I’d tell myself:

Stop trying to be perfect.

Stop waiting for permission.

Start living for you.

These lessons might seem simple. But they’re powerful. And they could save you years of struggle, just like they finally saved me.

Wherever you are right now—please know this:

You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re learning, growing, becoming.

So take one step today. One small act of kindness toward yourself.

Your future self will thank you.
