4 Ways to Beat Digital Fatigue

Do You Have Digital Fatigue?

By Jessica MillerPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

If you're a digital marketer or someone who works in the tech industry, chances are high that you've been battling with something called "digital fatigue."

Digital fatigue is essentially a mental exhaustion brought about by too much input from our devices. Since we live in a world where technology is constantly growing, you can expect there to be more gadgets, apps and gear to use. While this can be great for productivity, it can also have a negative effect on your state of mind. That's why many people are now saying that they need days off from their digital life or some sort of mental detoxification process after getting too much exposure to the Internet.

The good news is, there are actually some simple ways you can beat digital fatigue and take back control of your life.

1. Go Old-School With Your Workday

According to psychological research , sometimes it's highly effective to completely disengage from technology when you need to focus on something important for work or school. That's why many people now take their work outside the office and implement something called "offline hours." This basically means that you switch off your devices, turn off the Wi-Fi, don't let emails distract you and focus only on the tasks at hand.

2. Set Digital Boundaries For Yourself And Your Friends

The constant connectivity of our devices can also cause problems when it comes to relationships. In a study conducted by Time Well Spent , nearly 40% of participants said that they feel their personal and work lives are constantly colliding because of technology, thus taking a toll on their well-being.

If you're having trouble unplugging from the Internet when you need to spend quality time with your friends or family members, why not place a few boundaries? Set up specific times when you and your loved ones can disconnect from gadgets and just enjoy each other's company. This way, you'll be spending more time enjoying life rather than constantly staring at screens.

3. Unplug On The Weekend

Another simple solution for beating digital fatigue is to set up a digital detox period on the weekend. This means that you need to completely unplug from your gadgets during the two days that are meant for rest and relaxation. Why not spend some time reading an actual book or going out with your friends? You can find plenty of ways to indulge in real life instead of staring at screens all day long.

4. Take An Actual Vacation

For some people, all the above steps might not be enough to eliminate digital fatigue completely. If you feel like your mind is getting too overwhelmed by technology, take a real vacation and leave for a while. Yes, we know that travel can be expensive and leave you with less money in your wallet (at least temporarily). But if you want to make a habit out of beating digital fatigue, it's something you should seriously consider.

The simple fact is, there’s nothing that can completely replace the feeling of actual human contact. If you’re like me, the effects of this aren’t just physical sore eyes, more headaches than normal, etc. - but mental as well. I get a little more anxious, a bit off balance and overall it feels like the very vital connection between all humans is gone.

I take breaks from social media and anything else that makes me feel the need to be “plugged in” 24/7. It takes a conscious effort but I think it’s the least we can do to take care of ourselves and our minds.
