20 Quotes To Help You Become More Grateful
- David Stidston

One of the main reasons behind why so many people are unhappy, miserable, depressed, and unsatisfied, is because they have a constant focus on all the things they don't have in life, that they really desperately want. From more money, to nicer furniture, to a nicer house, to a nicer car, to a better job, to more modern assets and gadgets, you name it, most people will always choose to focus on being underprivileged and hard done by from what they don't have in life. What they do have is simply not good enough, in their mind anyway. Only a few years ago, I was one of these people. I would be constantly moaning and groaning about how other people were so lucky to have the house, the car, the assets, the furniture, and the other luxuries they had in life, whilst I had to settle for everything average. I am glad I have changed from being that type of person. It's that glass half full versus glass half empty scenario, and I always saw things from a glass half empty perspective. If I didn't have that glass full, I wasn't happy, nor was I at all satisfied. Since we are talking about glasses here, have you ever paid for a drink at a restaurant or bar, and upon receiving it, you note that the person who served it has filled it nowhere near the top? You really full dudded and disappointed because you've paid good money for that drink, only to have the glass filled barely halfway. Naturally we are going to feel that way if we set the expectations that we would receive a full glass. It's funny though that there's no sign anywhere saying that glasses will be filled to a certain level, we just assume and expect that they will be filled close to the top. We focus completely on what we didn't receive, rather than what we did. We forget the fact that someone is taking the time to serve us, the fact that we are privileged enough to even be able to afford the drink in the first place, and the fact that we are blessed to even have that drink at all, considering many people around the world would be overwhelmed with appreciation to have that drink themselves.
More of us need to adopt that glass half full mentality, and actually appreciate what we have, rather than what we don't have. What we focus on is naturally going to impact on how we feel. There's the feeling of disappointment and unhappiness if we choose to focus on glass half empty, or there's the feeling of gratitude and happiness if we choose to focus on glass half full. If only more of us took the opportunity to have a look around ourselves, and start to realize what we actually do have in our lives, and all the numerous things that we have become so accustomed to having in our lives, that we've been taking for granted for so long. We may not have the nicest or best looking house, but we have shelter and a roof over our head. We may not have the biggest, nicest, or newest car, but we at least have a car and it provides us with a convenient means of getting to various places. We may not be wealthy, but we have money enough to buy food, pay the rent, and pay the bills. We may have a run down and old looking bathroom, but we at least have access to clean water and can enjoy hot showers. We may have a job we despise, but at least we have a job that provides us with an income to survive on. We actually have so much to be grateful for, but we are too busy focusing on all that we don't have, that it makes us feel unhappy, unsatisfied, and miserable. It's not just material things and assets that we are blessed with, but also the people around us. We tend to take for granted those who love us and support us, and sometimes we hit that time in life when they pass away, and it's then we finally realize how much we truly appreciated them, but it's too late to tell them.
Even when it comes to our own body, we forget how blessed we really are to be able to see, hear, touch, smell, taste, walk, and talk. We have fully functional limbs, yet there are many in this world who are far less fortunate, and would die to have their legs, their sight, their hearing, their arms, and their independence back. It doesn't take much to look around and see just how blessed we really are, and then be able to celebrate and be thankful for that. If we can't be truly grateful for all that we have right now, we will never be grateful in the future, no matter what other blessings and rewards come our way. That absence of satisfaction and happiness we have now will never change, because we will never be satisfied and happy with what we have. We will always be wanting more, more, more! We need to trade our expectations for appreciation. We need to exchange our focus from being unsatisfied from what we don't have, to being grateful for what we do have. Gratitude, thankfulness, and appreciation contribute to an amazing amount of happiness and satisfaction that so many people are missing out on, because they're too busy chasing their wants, and drowning in their own sorrows of disappointment in the process. Learn the art and power of gratitude yourself, and begin to acknowledge how blessed you already are in life. Here are 20 quotes to help encourage you to become more grateful and appreciative in life.
