Mindfulness is the practice of being actively aware of the present moment without judgement. It can be practiced practically anywhere and can have benefits in many areas of everyday life, including work – as mindfulness practitioner and professional life coach Isis Monteverde knowns from experience.

How to Increase Mindfulness in the Workplace

What Is Workplace Mindfulness?

Workplace mindfulness is the mindfulness practise during work hours. In other words, it means being aware and mindful of the present moment throughout the working day. This involves actively paying attention to different thoughts, feelings and physical sensations that may arise. A mindful person will observe the comings and goings of the workplace and simply take in the information without judgement.

How to Practice Mindfulness at Work

Mindfulness in the workplace can start with something as simple as adding a few minutes of mindfulness practice to the everyday work routine and creating a clutter-free work environment. This can then be expanded into other areas of work life, such as only single-tasking work assignments and creating an intentional and precise schedule for different tasks, such as checking emails or responding to messages.

Mindfulness can also be applied to workplace communications by being more emphatic and practicing active listening when communicating with colleagues, as well as enhancing focus during meetings by staying truly present in the moment.

Benefits of Mindfulness in the Workplace

Mindfulness has several mental health benefits that can also be beneficial in the work environment:

• Stress Reduction: Mindfulness can help to reduce overall stress levels by teaching the practitioner to simply observe their thoughts and feelings, rather than getting hung up on them. This can be a helpful skill in stressful work situations and can help to avoid burnout.

• Better Focus and Productivity: Mindfulness allows a person to be fully present in the moment, which means giving their full attention to the task at hand. Better focus means fewer mistakes and more productive work hours.

• Better Communication and Collaboration: Mindfulness teaches empathy, which is a very useful skill in the workplace. Alongside this, things like active listening will help to create better communication and make collaborating with colleagues easier.

• Enhanced Decision Making: Mindfulness can help with being more decisive, which is a valuable asset in a work environment. It will also help the person to evaluate situations carefully and make decisions based on their own values.

• Increased Creativity: Mindfulness is known to aid with creative thinking, which can be helpful for creative projects, as well as things like problem solving and exploring creative solutions and ideas.
