The Power of 10 Minutes

Why a tiny daily habit changed my entire life

By Fazal HadiPublished 5 months ago 4 min read

They say big changes require big moves—but I’ve learned that sometimes, the most powerful transformation begins with something small. Ten minutes small.

A few years ago, I felt like my life was slipping through my fingers. I was overwhelmed, tired, and drowning in a sea of unfinished goals and constant distractions. I'd wake up, scroll through my phone, rush through my day, and collapse into bed wondering where all the time went. I knew I wanted something to shift—but every method out there felt too big, too complicated, or too time-consuming.

Then one day, almost out of desperation, I made myself a promise: Just ten minutes. Ten minutes a day—dedicated to anything that would serve my growth, my peace, or my goals. Not an hour, not a full-blown morning routine. Just ten intentional minutes. That decision—so small it almost felt silly—became the most powerful one I’ve ever made.

The First 10 Minutes: A Gentle Beginning

My first 10-minute ritual was journaling. I set a timer, opened a notebook, and just poured out whatever was in my head. It wasn’t poetic or deep. It was messy, honest, and real. But it gave me space to breathe. It helped me understand myself—what I was feeling, what I needed, and where I wanted to go.

Then came meditation. Just sitting in silence, focusing on my breath. At first, my mind was chaotic. But over time, those minutes became a sanctuary. They gave me clarity and calm I didn’t know I was missing.

10 Minutes Became My Foundation

Ten minutes isn’t much, but when you show up consistently, it compounds. Soon, I added light movement—stretching, walking, yoga. I started reading for 10 minutes every morning, learning from voices wiser than mine. Some days, I used the time to write affirmations or listen to something uplifting. Other days, I simply breathed and reflected.

These minutes became more than a habit. They became a lifeline. No matter how busy or unpredictable my day was, I knew I could anchor myself with ten minutes of purpose.

Consistency Built Self-Trust

One of the most unexpected gifts of this practice was that I began to trust myself again. I wasn’t making giant promises I couldn’t keep. I was showing up daily—in a small but powerful way. And every day that I kept my promise, I felt a little stronger. A little more capable. A little more in control of my life.

When we talk about building discipline or confidence, we often think we need to do something huge. But the truth is, confidence comes from keeping your word to yourself—no matter how small that word is.

Life Still Happens, But So Do I

Of course, life gets messy. There were days I felt anxious, uninspired, or exhausted. But ten minutes? I could always find ten minutes. Even on my worst days. And that became a reminder that I wasn’t powerless—I could still choose to show up for myself, even in the tiniest way.

What started as a personal experiment slowly began influencing every area of my life. I became more focused, more grounded, more grateful. I started completing long-postponed projects, reconnecting with friends, making better decisions, and sleeping better. All from a simple daily commitment.

It’s Not About the Time—It’s About the Intention

People ask me all the time: “What do you actually do in those ten minutes?” My answer? It changes. Some days I write. Some days I move. Some days I just sit still and breathe. The what doesn’t matter as much as the why. The power is in the pause. In giving yourself space. In starting your day with purpose instead of passivity.

We spend so much time thinking we need to overhaul our entire lives. But what we really need is a small crack of light. A moment to realign. A few minutes to remember who we are and what we value.

Why I Never Miss a Day

These ten minutes have become non-negotiable. Not because I’m rigid or obsessed—but because I’ve felt the difference. I know what it’s like to live without them. I know how quickly the day takes over when I don’t ground myself first.

So now, no matter where I am or what’s happening in my life, I make time for those ten minutes. Not because I have to. But because I want to. Because they make me better, kinder, clearer, and calmer. Because they remind me that I have a say in how I feel, how I show up, and what kind of life I build.

The Lesson

You don’t need a full hour. You don’t need to change everything overnight. You just need a window. A moment. A sliver of time to return to yourself. To choose intention over reaction. That’s where transformation begins.

If you feel stuck, start with ten minutes. Show up, even if it’s messy. Even if it’s small. Especially if it’s small. That’s where the power lives.
