Coincidence or Destiny? Unpacking the Magic of Synchronicity

According to the renowned psychologist Carl Jung, a significant coincidence occurs when an external event aligns with an inner state of the mind. This connection is based on meaning rather than a cause-and-effect relationship. Jung referred to this phenomenon as a "meaningful coincidence."

I Origins

In the film "I Origins," there is an intriguing instance of synchronicity that revolves around the character Ian Gray, a Ph.D. scholar investigating the intricacies of eyes. At a Halloween party, Ian encounters an unknown woman whose identity is concealed by a mask, but her striking green eyes captivate him, and they experience a powerful connection. However, the encounter is cut short when the woman abruptly departs without explanation, leaving Ian feeling alone and convinced that he will never see her again.

Ian is someone who does not believe in any kind of divine intervention or fate. He is an atheist who believes that our lives are not guided in any way. However, one day, he visits a store to buy a lottery ticket and some cigarettes, and to his surprise, the total amount comes to exactly "11 dollars and 11 cents." Interestingly, he takes out the exact amount of money from his pocket, which is "11.11." As he steps out of the store, he checks the time, and it shows the same numbers, "11:11." Later when he boards a bus, it happens to be the number 11 Broadway.

The situation takes an unusual turn when a dog starts barking at him, which irritates Ian so much that he decides to get off at an earlier stop than usual. At that very moment, he notices the same eyes he saw at a Halloween party on a billboard - the eyes of the mysterious woman he can't stop thinking about. This prompts Ian to research further to find out if it is really her.

The experiences he went through set him off on a path that would have a significant impact on his future. Despite witnessing remarkable coincidences aligning one after another, Ian attempted to brush it off as a chance occurrence. Nonetheless, he couldn't entirely overlook the incidents.

According to Jung, the essence of synchronicity lies in the perception of the numinous. It evokes a profound sense of wonder and amazement, which transcends our mundane existence and connects us to something beyond ourselves. This experience allows us to step out of our everyday routines and connect with the divine.

The Girl from Petrovka

In the 1970s, Hopkins played a leading role in a film titled "The Girl from Petrovka," which was based on George Feifer's book of the same title. When he agreed to take part in the movie, he traveled to London to locate a copy of the book. Despite visiting numerous bookstores throughout the city, he was unable to find it. Eventually, he gave up his search and made his way to Leicester Square Underground Station to catch a train back home.

While waiting for the train, he noticed a book left behind on a bench nearby, which caught his attention. Upon examining the book, he was surprised to discover that it was the very book he had been looking for. However, as he flipped through the pages, he noticed that someone had scribbled on many of them.

Later, Hopkins had the opportunity to meet George Feifer, the author of the book. During their meeting, Hopkins shared his remarkable story with Feifer. Surprisingly, Feifer revealed that he had once possessed a personal copy of the book and had written some significant notes on the margins of its pages. However, he lost it and never saw it again.

When Hopkins presented Feifer with the book he had found at the train station, asking if it was his, the response was astonishing.

It turned out to be Feifer's original copy, complete with the same notes he had written in the margins all those years ago. The odds of this happening were unimaginable. Losing a book that was important to you, only to have it resurface at a train station in one of the largest cities in the world, where it's found by an actor who just so happens to be starring in the movie version of the very same book you wrote.

This incredible event occurred because Hopkins paid attention and was open to the signs. It could have been easily missed if he had not been mindful. This story highlights the importance of being present and living in the moment as much as possible. It is crucial to take the time to be mindful and aware of our surroundings.

Library Angel

Arthur Koestler proposed the concept of the "Library Angel," in which an individual discovers the ideal book or reference at precisely the right moment.

Dame Rebecca West, a British author, shared her experience of sifting through an overwhelming amount of books and documents related to the Nuremberg trials. Despite finding a large number of volumes, the major challenge was that the information contained within them was not organized or indexed. This lack of structure meant that it could take months to locate the necessary information. After tirelessly scouring through pages, she eventually turned to one of the librarians in frustration and expressed her doubts, "I'm never gonna find it, it could be in any one of these." Then she decides to pull a book from the shelf at random and, much to her surprise, found the exact page with the information she needed.

Another instance was shared by Graham Hancock, the author, where he explains how he has been fortunate to stumble upon relevant books and research at just the right moment to make progress in his work.

In 1989, while visiting a friend, the friend handed him a book called 'Hamlet's Mill.' This unexpected gift played a crucial role in his subsequent book, 'Fingerprints of the Gods,' which he may not have written if he had not received the book at that precise moment.

"Library Angels" is a fitting name for this phenomenon, as it feels like some sort of divine intervention is at play, guiding us towards the knowledge we require precisely when we need it. According to Graham, receiving that specific book at that specific moment had a profound impact on the course of his life.

Universe signals

"When you're headed in the right direction, the universe has a way of acknowledging it by giving you subtle signs every now and then." By paying close attention to these signs, we can be guided toward the things that we're meant to encounter exactly when we need them most. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Those who are fated to cross paths will do so, seemingly by coincidence, at the perfect moment."
