Spirituality and the Divine: The Crown Chakra
What is the seventh chakra?

We often associate the number seven with God or divinity. We think of it as connecting or relating to the otherworldly, higher levels of consciousness, and a way of really seeing things in this bigger, cosmic way. It can even help us think about dimensions, and how we reach other dimensions in this life.
The seventh chakra, or crown chakra, is located at the very top of the head, signifying that this part of the body is what connects us with everything else in the universe. This chakra is associated with the color violet and represents the spiritual aspects of the self.
Meditating on your crown chakra will help you know yourself and also tap into the cosmic connection that brings us all together in the universe. In essence, this chakra teaches us about the "big picture" of existence, and if you can strengthen this chakra, you may start to learn the answers to those larger questions about life we often find ourselves pondering.
The crown chakra controls the head, brain, and pineal glands. As such, this chakra helps you with your wisdom, forethought, and intelligence to make rational decisions and also to see things with a clear head. Your crown chakra makes you aware of your consciousness and your purpose in this world, which is something lots of people spend their entire lives doing. The thing is, not everyone can even tap into the crown chakra. It is such a powerful part of the chakras, and it is often the most difficult to open up. If you have an underused crown chakra, you might be confused as to what your true and sole purpose is on this Earth. Learning to open up the crown chakra and strengthen your sense of self will help guide you in the right direction, but you have to be open minded and really willing to let your mind wander to the never ending possibilities in the universe.
If the crown chakra is imbalanced, then you may find yourself with some problems or issues that still need to be resolved in your life. These could be major issues that are actually hindering you from finding your way in this world. We often tend to block out this chakra and hold ourselves back from achieving our dreams and goals. An under-active crown chakra yields inactivity to the point that you may be unaware of your spiritual purpose in this world. You are likely very confused and have a weak sense of identity.
On the other hand, people with an over-active crown chakra may feel that they obsess too much over things and that they are always looking ahead to the future and not really focusing on the "right here, right now" so much.
It is important to have a good balance when it comes to your crown, because otherwise you will find yourself dealing with a number of problems physically and emotionally throughout your life. You might feel like you are just "going through the motions" without a clear sense of purpose or direction. For a lot of individuals, this often manifests itself in different ways, but some of the more common are struggling with mental illness, learning disabilities, or even a disbelief in the psychiatric or spiritual aspects of human consciousness. Even so, everyone has the power to strengthen their crown chakra if they put in the effort and stay open to the experience.
If you feel that you might have a blockage of your crown chakra, here are a few ways that you can try to open up this chakra:
Meditate: Meditation is one of the most effective ways to balance your chakras. Focus on your crown chakra in meditation. It may be helpful to have a chakra card or image that represents the crown chakra that you can focus on during meditation. There are also many resources on YouTube that have guided meditations for each chakra. People also say that essential oils can be helpful during this kind of meditation, so consider using this as well. Imagine a beautiful violet light at the top of your head, extending out and upwards towards the sky and the stars. Imagine knowing and being confident in what you know.
Use the following affirmations to help guide you during your meditation:
-I am guided by my intuition.
-The divine energy of the Universe flows through me.
-I surrender to this higher power, and I welcome this spiritual guidance into my life.
- I know who I am, I have a strong sense of self.
-I am confident in my abilities to help the world around me.
-I am a divine being and I have a strong connection to the Universe.
-I love the person that I am, and I have the drive and motivation to make a strong impact on the world around me.
-I accept myself for who I am and trust my journey to a higher self.
The crown chakra is important because it controls your spiritual self and your identity. Without sense of self and Universal consciousness, you will have a hard time seeing how you fit into the world around you. As stated previously, it is one of the most difficult chakras to balance as a lot of times, it is very common for people to have blockages in this area.
Young people in particular are usually unaware of how they fit into society because they are not fully developed yet, so they often have a lot of uncertainties about their future. This is a normal feeling to have. Another example would be if you are going through a mid-life crisis. This may be causing you to re-evaluate your purpose in this world. All of these things can effect the balance of your crown chakra. As we grow, that inner light from the crown can become much stronger, if we choose to open up the power of the Universe that we all possess deep inside. It is this power, this knowledge, that will ultimately set you free.
If you are unsure of whether you are fully utilizing your potential, consider asking yourself these questions and reflecting on these things prior to meditating on the crown chakra:
Do you fit in with the world around you?
Are you a very spiritual person?
How do you stay connected with your spiritual self?
What is your purpose in the world and for the future?
If you have some clear answers to these ideas, then you are well on your way to achieving a more balanced and open crown chakra. If not, you now know the important work that needs to be done, within you. Either way, knowing this is the first step on your journey to understanding the crown chakra and why it is so crucial to our existence.
