The Covid 19 Diaries
My COVID 19 Calendar 23rd March 2020 will be looked back on by historians studying Britain as one of the most significant days in Britain’s history. Not in the same way as 1st September 1939 when the country started to face the existential threat posed by the outbreak of World War II but as a day when the country had to finally face up to the reality of the COVID 19 virus. For these diaries 23rd March 2020 will be referred to as ‘Day 0’ and all references to the days before and following will be referred to as ‘Day - ‘ or ‘Day + ’ respectively.

Portrait of a Memory
I was looking through the classifieds while sipping coffee at my local coffee shop. Yes, the classifieds in an honest-to-God newspaper. I’m also one of those people who still types her letters on a typewriter—unironically. But that’s beside the point. I was sifting through the classifieds because in my spare time I like to do commissioned work for the elderly. They happen to be the only ones who still subscribe and write to the actual newspaper. As I was perusing past the “clean my house’s” and “walk my pampered pooch’s,” something caught my eye:

14 Days of Quarantine...
These past two years... I mean weeks, has been an interesting for many of us. I'm sure if you're not apart of the lucky bunch who still has their jobs and some sort of security, you've probably started to lose your mind like I have. Being locked away under quarantine to protect my life and the life of those closest and most vulnerable to me has been both challenging and exhausting. There's only so much Netflix and YouTube a girl can watch before she loses her sight because of the blue light emitting from her laptop.

Porn is a Drug
Porn is a drug. I believe pornography destroys people mentally. However, over time, I think that porn addictions have the potential to wreck relationships, finances, motivation, and many other things in peoples lives. The sad thing about it is that American society is producing and consuming pornographic material like no tomorrow. According to a website named Fight the New Drug, the most of pornographic material is made by American, “Data reveals that some 60% of the world’s porn sites—about 428 MILLION individual pages, more than one per American—are hosted in the US.” This is sad and should not be something that the U.S. should be proud of in the least. In some ways I think fighting a porn addiction is harder than many other types of addictions because so much of pornographic material is completely free and highly accessible, whereas other addictive behaviors require money initially. The essence of porn degrades the human body and objectifies people. Sex is supposed to be sacred, shared between a husband and wife in private.

Building a Plant Strong Body
You stocked your fridge with tofu and oat milk, added in a workout regimen, but you still are frustrated with your physique. Let’s start with the good news: embracing an (unprocessed) diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds gives you a huge advantage. This lifestyle will fuel your athletic performance, help your muscles recover quickly, and remove unhealthy saturated fats and cholesterol from entering your body. If you just care about healthy weight loss without any consideration to muscle, athletic performance, or aesthetics, you can stop here. Weight loss will happen seamlessly. However, if you want to tack on some lean muscle or sculpt your body, some extra planning and knowledge is warranted.

Midwife Mary Francis Coley
I recently watched the educational documentary film, “All My Babies: A Midwife’s Own Story,” featuring Midwife Mary Francis Hill Coley, using the Library of Congress Youtube channel. I was so impressed by the film and it’s star actor that I wanted to write this essay about her. I invite you to watch the film for yourself, but to recap, in the film you will see a phenomenal example of an extraordinary midwife nurse in her home community practice. In light of the current worldwide discrepancies in healthcare and urgent demand for access, people could learn a lot from Mary Coley. Narrated and acted by Mary herself, the film acts as a template for any beginner to midwifery and provides sound advice to any midwife acting in a rural or field setting. In short, if left with no guidebook, and forced to perform an emergency delivery, this film could make all the difference for you. I have decided that she is the face for my inspiration board in the coming year. What the world needs now, is Midwife Mary Coley.
