Kansas is currently grappling with a significant tuberculosis (TB) outbreak primarily centered in Wyandotte and Johnson counties. Since January 2024 the outbreak has resulted in 67 active TB cases and 79 latent infections. This surge has been described by state health officials as the largest documented TB outbreak in U.S. history.

The outbreak began in January 2024 and has led to two fatalities. As of January 24 2025 (60) active cases have been reported in Wyandotte County and seven in Johnson County. Health authorities are actively treating these cases and monitoring the situation closely.

Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can impact other parts of the body. It spreads when an infected person coughs speaks or sings releasing bacteria into the air. Between 2021 and 2022 an outbreak of multidrug resistant TB was identified in the state involving 13 individuals with active disease and nine with latent infections across four households. In Wyandotte County local health officials have implemented a $1 million plan to address the outbreak.
