Why Night-Shift Workers Can’t “Fix” Sleep With Normal Advice
A story from Nowshera about work, responsibility, and a body that refuses to forget the night

You may have noticed something that does not make sense. You try to follow sleep advice. You still feel awful.
Sound familiar?
You go home tired... You lie down. You sleep. But when you wake up, it feels like sleep did not work... If you have ever stared at the ceiling after sleeping and thought, What just happened?, you already understand.
At some point, you may wonder, Why is this so hard for me? That question matters… And the answer is not what most people think. I know this feeling because I live it now…
The Problem with Common Sleep Advice
Here’s the part no one makes you aware and warns you about…
When I was studying at my university, from 2020 to 2024, my life was healthy. I slept at night. I woke up in the morning. I had a healthy meal. I studied during the day. My body felt ultra normal. My mind felt relaxed and clear… Sleep worked the way people say it should.
Back then, the advice made sense. It was working but…
Then life changed. Quickly, silently, and suddenly….
In late 2024, I made a serious decision. I decided I was going to marry. After that decision, reality became very clear. A job was no longer optional. It became necessary. It became the foundation for everything else.
You don’t think about sleep when you’re making life decisions like that… You think about responsibility. So, I started looking for work. And if you know Pakistan, you know this part already.
In many public-sector and service jobs, night shifts are what you get. Not because you want them. Because that’s what’s available… That is when the advice stopped working.
Your Body Still Knows What Time It Is
This is the part that feels unfair. My job changed, but my body did not.
Even now, working through the night in Nowshera, Pakistan, my body reacts the same way it always has…. When it gets dark, my eyes grow heavy. My thoughts slow down. Focus becomes work instead of something natural.
No motivation fixes that. No responsibility overrides it. And at 3 a.m., when the streets of Nowshera are quiet and the lights inside feel too bright, you feel it clearly.
The silence is heavy… Your body knows what time it is.
This is not laziness - This is biology.
Sleeping During the Day Is Hard - More Than it Looks
People say, “Just sleep during the day.” I do. Or at least, I try.
I go home in the morning. I close the curtains. I lie down. But light still leaks in. Cars pass. Voices rise. Phones buzz…
Your brain notices all of it. It knows it is daytime. So it never fully lets go. You sleep, but lightly. You wake up early. You wake up often.
And when you finally get up, your body feels heavy, like sleep barely happened. If you’ve lived this, you know exactly what I mean.
You Are Human - Being Consistent Is Not Always Possible
Everyone talks about routine. But routine assumes control. Days off pull you back into daytime life. Family events happen in the sun. Appointments do not care about night shifts. Each change pushes your sleep time again.
Your body keeps trying to catch up. It never does. It feels like jet lag. Except it doesn’t end…
This Tired Feeling Is More Than Being Sleepy
This tired feels different, doesn’t it? It is not just wanting to sleep. It is heaviness. Your head feels full. Your energy runs out faster than it should…
You can sleep and still feel worn down. That’s when you start to realize something deeper is happening.
Night work changes more than sleep… It changes mood. Focus. Hunger. Health. And no amount of “better habits” fully fixes that.
Why the Advice Starts Hurting You?
At first, the advice is annoying. Later, it hurts. “Go to bed earlier.” “Try harder.” “I worked nights once and I was fine.” You start to feel unseen…
Because you remember how you used to live. You remember sleeping well. You remember feeling healthy. You know this change is real.
The problem isn’t you - The advice is wrong for this life.
What Actually Helps You? - Juss a Lil' Bit
There is no perfect fix for night work. That took me time to accept. Some things help a little. Dark rooms. Quiet hours. Alone rests.
Protecting sleep when possible, like if a thief is trying to steal it, and if it is some expensive jewel.
Let go of the idea of feeling “normal.” But the biggest shift???
Stop blaming yourself.
The Problem Was Never You
I once lived a healthy life… I did not forget how to sleep. My body did not suddenly fail. My life changed.
If this sounds like you, you are not alone.
You are not weak. You are not lazy. You are not failing.
You are doing your best in a world that runs on a clock not made for you.
I am still tired… I haven’t recovered. But now, I understand why. And that understanding, surprisingly, brings a little peace.
So, the short answer is Don’t force it - live with it.
