Doctor Mike Tries KETO for 30 DAYS
Navigating Social Situations and Food Choices

The Motivational Kickstart
Motivated by a recent breakup, I decided to challenge myself with a one-month ketogenic diet. Feeling the weight of the emotional upheaval, I was determined to channel my energy into something positive. I saw this as an opportunity not only to improve my physical health but also to boost my mental well-being. Setting clear goals, I aimed to transform my body, enhance my appearance, and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, I wanted to share this journey with my followers, inviting them to join me, learn from my experiences, and perhaps even embark on their own health transformations.
I began my keto journey with a hearty meal of beef chili, cheese, and cauliflower rice, skipping breakfast and unintentionally practicing intermittent fasting. To my surprise, the first few days weren't as difficult as I had anticipated. I experienced minimal keto flu symptoms and no significant sugar withdrawal, which made the initial transition smoother.
Early Wins and Unexpected Struggles
However, my first heavy workout on keto was challenging. Despite getting a good night's sleep, I felt incredibly fatigued, likely due to the sudden depletion of glycogen stores from my carb-restricted diet. My strength remained consistent, but I fatigued much quicker than usual, which was frustrating.
Cardio sessions were equally tough. While I could initially keep up with my friends during sprints, my stamina quickly diminished. I suspected that my body was still adjusting to the lack of carbohydrates, which significantly impacted my endurance.
Navigating Social Situations and Food Choices
Week two introduced new challenges, especially when it came to food choices during long work shifts. Meal prepping became crucial, yet I often resorted to less appealing options like canned salmon with mayonnaise, which I jokingly referred to as "cat food." Social events posed another hurdle. While friends indulged in carb-heavy snacks, I had to meticulously plan my meals to stick to the high-fat, low-carb keto requirements.
Attending events like the Sebastian Maniscalco concert highlighted the importance of planning ahead. Surrounded by tempting foods, I realized the necessity of eating beforehand to avoid breaking my diet. Navigating menus at fast food joints and restaurants required careful consideration to maintain the high-fat, low-carb balance essential for keto.
Realizations and Resilience
Despite the challenges, I started noticing positive changes by the end of two weeks. My clothes fit better, and my abs began to show. Although most of the initial weight loss was likely water weight, seeing these results was motivating. However, I also experienced increased hunger, particularly in the mornings, possibly due to consuming fewer calories than usual.
As the weeks progressed, I struggled with cravings for high-carb foods like bananas and milkshakes. I also realized I had a habit of eating out of boredom. On keto, mindless snacking wasn't an option unless I stuck to nuts, which quickly became monotonous.
Midway through the month, I faced a setback after consuming several alcoholic drinks, which temporarily knocked me out of ketosis. Despite this, I reminded myself that everyone makes mistakes, and two steps forward with one step back is still progress. This mindset helped me stay motivated and continue my keto journey.
Final Results and Lasting Takeaways
At the end of the 30 days, I had successfully adhered to the ketogenic diet, consuming 75% of my calories from fat, 20% from protein, and 5% from carbs. I lost six pounds, dropping from 208 to 202 pounds, and my abs became more defined. Although I didn't notice significant mental changes, I did feel more stable energy levels throughout the day.
For the average healthy person, a short course of keto can help with weight loss and may not be detrimental to health. However, it's essential to consult with a doctor before starting any new diet to understand the benefits and potential risks.
