To do what they couldn’t.
My grandmother loved to draw. I have two of her almost faded drawings hanging on my wall. Well, one is hanging, the other one is leaning on a side-table. But the particulars are not important. Important is that she loved drawing but she couldn’t. It was East-Berlin, the wall was tearing the country apart and no one had the time to frolic around with a bunch of crayons. So she exchanged the pencils for some scissors and became a proper haircutter for the community, because painting is a “breadless art” she would say, and so the dream withered along with her hair.

Part I: The Downfall of Medicine
Let me tell you what you don't want to hear. Let me be blunt and opinionated. Let me be "political" and let me own my voice. I am not a brilliant hero. I do not want the responsibility you force on my shoulders but I will do it if you demand it because I have little choice. When you poison what I do and what I love, you poison what I can provide as a genuine service. I want to show to loyalty and honour but when you corrupt my desires with your desires, you ask more of me than I can carry. Eventually I will break and die. I will lose myself and I will be bitter at you and everything. I will scream silently and turn against the very essence of what I lived for. I will leave you behind and you will cry at the stupidity you admitted when you eventually succumbed to your naivety.

Carrying a woman's voice
Hi, I am Em, Em Ahlawat. Em is a pen name I have chosen for myself. Now you may think how authentic my voice would be under the shadow of a nom de plume, but you have to agree, there is a mystery behind a name such as Em, isn't there? Besides I am not totally changing my identity, on the contrary reclaiming it. My family name is Ahlawat, which I had given up after marriage but I am ready to reintroduce to the world. Why do women even change their last names, why did I? But I digress, that’s a topic for another post. I am British by birth and of Indian heritage. America is home now. I had the opportunity to attend schools many different parts of the world but spent my young adult life in India. I have stayed away from my parents since I was 10 years old, all in the pursuit of a good education, “to not be lost and be someone”, as my mother would say. So I grew up independent in my thoughts and a tad bit feminist in my bones. I grew up feeling that the weight of being a woman either gives you a voice or takes it away from you. I was unreservedly vocal then or maybe was forced to be. A young woman growing up in India under the prying and not always kind eyes of the men around me, I had to put the armor on and look them straight in the eye and speak my truth. I believe there was a mischievous side to my voice as well - unafraid, playful, and content. I did like this side of my voice.

Stand Back Testosterone,
I think every woman who works in a male dominated field has had a male partner who feels protective of her. The need to keep their female partners can sometimes be, well, a bit too much. Don't get me wrong. I appreciated all of my male partners looking out for me but I was also always looking out for them. We had each other's six. ( we had each other's backs.)

Construction
At 24 years of age I finished my master’s degree in marine biology. I like water and I love sea creatures, and I love the idea of discovering a new species someday. Getting a master’s in marine biology is easy if it’s your passion but finding a job afterwards can be a problem—they virtually don’t exist.
