A Perfect Itinerary

The Maldives is a scenic group of islands located in the Indian Ocean. It is a dream destination, which is famous for its white beaches and luxury resorts. While it's ideal for honeymoons or retreats, you can have an unforgettable Maldivian break in just 5 days. With smart planning and the right amount of leisure and adventure, here’s how to make the most of 5 days in the Maldives.

Day 1: Arrival and Island Welcome

After arriving at Velana International Airport in Malé you’ll be transferred to your resort by speedboat or seaplane. This trip in itself is exciting. You’ll be flying over the atolls, which will give you a bird’s eye view of the Maldives.

Once you arrive at your resort, you can spend your day relaxing. Go for a walk along the beach, dip your toes in the lagoon and enjoy a welcome cocktail. The Maldives is all about slowing down and embracing peace. For dinner, you can try fresh seafood like grilled reef fish or lobster.

If you’re on a budget, consider staying on a local island like Maafushi or Thulusdhoo which has affordable guesthouses and offers more authentic experiences.

Day 2: Snorkelling and Water Adventures

Your trip to the Maldives wouldn’t be complete without exploring the amazing marine life. Most resorts and local islands offer half-day snorkelling trips to nearby reefs. The best beach resorts in the Maldives such as the elegant NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort, have house reefs. Here, you can swim with parrotfish, angelfish, turtles and even manta rays if you’re lucky.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider a scuba diving session. The islands have some of the best dive sites in the world. These include places like Banana Reef and Maaya Thila. Don’t worry if you’re new to it, many resorts offer programmes for beginners.

You can also try watersports like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or jet-skiing. Or if you prefer a slower pace, simply relax in an overwater hammock or book a sunset cruise.

Day 3: Island Hopping and Local Culture

Spend your third day going island hopping. There are quite a few uninhabited islands, sandbanks and local villages to explore. A full day trip usually includes snorkelling stops, beach BBQ lunch and time to swim or sunbathe on secluded beaches.

You will also have a chance to learn about the Maldivian culture. Visit a local island to see traditional wooden houses, mosques and markets. Talk to locals and try Maldivian snacks like masroshi (stuffed flatbread) or bajiya (coconut pastries).

Make sure to dress conservatively, by covering your shoulders and knees when visiting these islands - to respect local customs.

Day 4: Spa Day

After all this activity, you can take a break and treat yourself to a day of relaxation. Most resorts offer world-class spas with treatments using local coconut oil and sea salt where you can opt for a beachside massage.

Later, celebrate your trip with a sunset dinner. Many resorts offer private dining on the beach or even floating dinners in a pool or lagoon. If you’re on a budget, having a picnic on a sandbank during sunset can be just as magical.

Don’t forget to stargaze! The night skies in the Maldives are clear, since there is little pollution.

Day 5: Final Morning and Departure

On your last day, wake up early and go for a walk at sunrise or swim in the lagoon. You can sit down to a special Maldivian breakfast such as mas huni (shredded tuna with coconut and lime). Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a quick dip, or be able to do some shopping before you head back to Malé.

If you’re flying out by seaplane, you’ll be able to take in the last views of the atolls!
