How To Find The Best Hidden Gems In Koh Samui

Off The Maps, Into The Magic

By Jeewanthi ArmstrongPublished 7 months ago 3 min read

There is something exciting about discovering places before others. That secret beach cove, the hidden waterfall or the cosy café that locals love but the tourists haven’t found, it is the kind of experience that stays with you longer than any Instagram photo. Koh Samui, Thailand’s beautiful island paradise, is full of these moments, if you know where to look. This guide will help you discover Koh Samui’s best hidden gems without the crowds.

Start  With The Locals, Not The Guidebooks

When you are at a laid-back, well-connected place like NH Collection Samui Peace Resort, take a moment to talk to the staff or friendly locals around the town. Concierge teams, bartenders and even tuk-tuk drivers often know where the real magic is, the viewpoints without crowds, the family-run noodle stalls or the quiet snorkelling spot that doesn’t show up on tourist maps. Unlike major tourist hubs, Koh Samui still has a close-knit island-style vibe.

Discover What To Do In Koh Samui

Most travellers come for the sand, but there is much more to the island than its coastline. If you want to understand the soul of Samui, try a few offbeat and exciting Koh Samui Activities such as zip-lining, cookery classes or even a safari tour or boat cruise. The best time to discover the beauty of Koh Samui is from March to early June, when it's sunny, quiet and perfect for scootering around. Occasional rains but thriving greenery and crowd-free time will be from September to early November. If you are looking for solitude, avoid December and January as that’s the peak season. Many hidden spots won't feel hidden during this time of the year.

Go Beyond The Beaches Of Koh Samui

Explore the Na Muang Waterfall, which is a beautiful twin waterfall. If you go at sunrise, you might have the entire place to yourself. The walk up to the waterfall is easy, and the upper waterfall is more secluded. You can have a dip in the natural pool and enjoy the clean, clear water of the waterfall. Another must-visit location is the Red Temple or Wat Ratchathammaram. Most tourists visit the Big Buddha or Wat Phai Laem. However, if you want a peaceful alternative, the terracotta-coloured temple is perfect. The details in the art make it ideal for photography. The Secret Buddha Garden, high up in the hills near Taling Ngam, should be in your itinerary. The most covered statues and hidden paths in this secret garden create a dream-like ambience, winning the hearts of the visitors. Getting there involves a bumpy ride, but the views and peaceful ambience are worth it.

Your Key To Hidden Corners

Koh Samui is a relatively small island, and the best way to get around isn’t by taxi or tour, it's by scooter. For just a few dollars a day, you can ride at your own pace and stop whenever something catches your eye. Some of the best spots like Laem Sor Pagoda, a golden pagoda by the sea, Thong Krut Fishing village, which gives insight into old Samui life or Lipa Noi Beach, which has soft white sand and barely a soul in sight, can be found while travelling on your scooter.  Always wear a helmet, ride safely and check your maps and have a physical map, just in case the signal drops in the hills.

Eat Where The Crowds Aren’t

There are many authentic food places in Koh Samui. It is famous for its bold flavours. You can visit the Lamai Night Market on Sunday evening and Mae Nam Walking Street on Thursday to enjoy some amazing delicacies.  When in Koh Samui, you must try the Khao Yum, a colourful rice salad with herbs, lemongrass, lime leaves and a spicy-sweet sauce made from fermented fish and shrimp paste. It’s zesty, aromatic and unique. Another must-try dish is Gaeng Som, A sour, spicy curry made with turmeric and tamarind. Often comes with local fish or shrimp and is great with rice. Last but not least, try Sataw pad Kapi, a stir-fried stink beans with prawns and shrimp paste. Koh Samui is famous for its Samui-style Ice cream made of fresh coconuts.
