Echoes of Existence: The Legacy of Energy and Memory

Exploring How Our Actions Shape the Universe and What We Leave Behind!

By THiNKPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Hey there! Have you ever thought about how we’ll be remembered in the future? Or how the past really happened? It’s a fascinating topic, and it reminds me of some intriguing stories and concepts that might just give us some perspective on our place in the universe.

### The Tale of Toto

Let’s start with a cute little dog named Toto from *The Wizard of Oz*. While he was credited as Toto in the film, his real name was Terry. When Terry passed away in 1945, her owner and trainer, Carl Spitz, buried her on his ranch in Los Angeles. But here’s where it gets interesting: when the Ventura Highway was built in 1958, it went right through her grave! Sadly, her remains were disturbed and have never been found. In 2011, a memorial was erected at Hollywood Forever Cemetery to honor her, but because she’s not buried there, it’s considered a cenotaph—an empty tomb.

### Reflections on the Past

Toto’s story got me thinking about our own legacies. Recently, I visited Greece, where I marveled at the incredible history, from the Acropolis to ancient tombs and even the first known analog computer. It made me wonder: how will future archaeologists view our society thousands of years from now? Will they piece together our history accurately?

### The Mystery of Existence

This contemplation leads to a mind-boggling idea known as Last Thursdayism. It suggests that the universe was created just last Thursday, and everything we know—our memories, photos, and experiences—simply popped into existence at that time. While it sounds absurd, it’s nearly impossible to prove it wrong. Why? Because any evidence we present can be dismissed as part of the “creation” narrative. This thought experiment invites us to consider how we know the past really happened.

### Understanding the Past

We can’t conduct experiments on the past like we can with scientific phenomena. So how do we understand what happened? That’s where philosophical tools like Occam’s Razor come into play. This principle suggests that when faced with competing explanations, we should choose the one that makes the fewest assumptions. For example, it’s more reasonable to believe that a historical site was built long ago rather than assuming it all magically appeared last Thursday.

Another fascinating concept is Newton's Flaming Laser Sword, which states that if something can't be settled by experimentation, it’s not worth debating. This means that the past—while elusive—exists as it was, and we must accept that future generations may not remember us as we would like them to.

### The Legacy of Entropy

Now, let’s get a bit scientific. Have you ever heard of the Second Law of Thermodynamics? It tells us that energy spreads out and disperses. In simple terms, energy in our universe tends to move from concentrated states to more dispersed ones. This process is called entropy. So, when you shuffle a deck of cards or even just sit back and relax, you’re contributing to the universe's growing entropy.

Your existence, your actions—everything you do adds to this universal entropy, and in a way, that’s your legacy. Even if history forgets your name or misinterprets your accomplishments, the universe will always remember the energy you contributed during your time here.

### The Future of the Universe

Some scientists believe that eventually, the universe will reach a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, known as the “Heat Death.” At that point, energy will be evenly distributed, and nothing will happen anymore. This is estimated to occur in about 8 googol years! The funny thing is, those who choose to be a bit lazy or inactive are, in a way, helping postpone this Heat Death by limiting their energy contributions. So, if you’re lounging around, you’re not just being lazy—you’re being considerate to the universe!

In the end, our legacies may be uncertain, and our memories might fade over time. But what we can be sure of is that we’re all part of this grand cosmic dance of energy and entropy. So take a moment to reflect on your contributions, both big and small. And remember, whether you’re working hard or just chilling out, you’re leaving your mark on the universe, however small it may seem. Thanks for joining me on this journey through time and energy!
