Edgy Disdain
Where Sarcasm Meets Rebellion and Disdain Becomes an Art Form

Day 7/366 days of writing and publishing articles in 2024.
A few days ago, I found myself immersed in the creation of a background for a painting that I plan to exhibit in an upcoming show at a wine shop. I had no idea where I would end up while I was working on the background. While I had been painting beautiful pieces inspired by wines I deeply appreciate, an unconventional idea struck me - why not create a piece for a wine I despise? It was during a session of listening to a funky bassline that the concept of "funk" took on a new meaning.
If you're interested, you can read the article I wrote about this experience here. As I worked on completing the painting last night, I decided that a single conversation piece wouldn't suffice. I felt the need for a trilogy, envisioning them hanging in the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc section of the wine shop, sparking conversations among curious onlookers. I could picture the people standing around that section laughing and conversing. The trilogy to serve as a sort of visual ice breaker if you will.
"Edgy Disdain" - that's what I've chosen to call this series. If I were to write a description for a label on a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, it would go something like this:
"My painting inspired my words. Aromatic Assault - imagine a wine so pungent, it's as if a skunk crashed a grape stomping party. It's like someone took a handful of grass clippings, squeezed them into a bottle, and exclaimed, 'Voila, wine!' The aroma hits you like a punch in the face. And the taste? Well, let's just say it's akin to sucking on a lemon dipped in those very same grass clippings.
Ah, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the rebellious teenager of wines, having just discovered a can of energy drink. It's like a hyperactive grape on steroids, ready to party all night long. But alas, the night takes a tragic turn. The aroma becomes a slap in the face, with notes of overly enthusiastic cat pee. It's the kind of wine that makes you question if you've stumbled upon a science experiment gone wrong. But hey, if you're into that whole 'acquired taste' thing, then this wine is definitely for you. As for me, personally, I'm not a fan of this particular varietal from that region. Send help."
The article I previously wrote while immersed in the creation of this piece took me on a captivating journey down a creative rabbit hole. I have discovered that the combination of writing, art, and music has an extraordinary effect on my creative process. It all begins with the music, which serves as the catalyst for inspiration. From there, the vision takes shape on the canvas, and almost magically, the words flow effortlessly onto the page. It is as if each element fuels the next, creating an intricate web of creativity. A dear friend of mine often says, "Creativity breeds creativity," and I couldn't agree more. It is a process that propels me through a creative wormhole, consistently leading to outcomes more spectacular than the initial spark of an idea. It is a multidimensional experience that transcends the boundaries of individual art forms.
Have you ever experienced the interconnectedness of different creative mediums, where one art form inspires and enhances another?
I’d love to hear your thoughts below.
