Words Have Power - Therefore You Have Power

Human Value

By Marysol RamosPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Someone walked past her and thought, “what a beauty.” Another that knew her well said “she’s so sweet and kind,” meanwhile, there was a fight in her mind wondering why she was alive.

The world provided her with kindness, and in return she provided the world with the same; but this was new to her. Life wasn’t always this way.

In this very moment, as she wondered about her reasoning to be alive, she smelled the aroma of the Jasmine flowers in the breeze. She felt the wind glide past her skin as if being an example of what freedom truly was. She saw the trees sway in the wind, dancing as the value of each one was literally to give life. She heard people around her laughing, arguing, tapping their phones, clinking spoons against cups as they stirred their teas and coffee, and she somehow tasted the lemon bread that was being made in a nearby bakery.

She sat at the table waiting for the server to come take her order, wondering how everyone had something in their lives they would die for — meanwhile, she wanted something in her life to stay alive for.

She knew deep inside that it was just one of her “moments.” Her thoughts would process, her heart would settle, and everything would clear up. All she needed was a bit of time — time to think, to feel, to understand herself once again.

It’s like she was born a white piece of paper. Growing up, others were pencils. Like any child, she observed and absorbed, and she trusted those that were her “family,” and “friends.”

Very lightly written were words such as “beautiful,” “smart,” and “strong,” — darkly written (as it was written repetitively throughout the years) were the words “worthless,” “stupid,” and “burden.”

As an adult, she didn’t allow others to be the pencil anymore. She took a break from the world so no-one, absolutely no-one, could write a single word on her mind or soul.

She darkened the words “beautiful,” “smart,” and “strong,” while also adding “gifted,” “a gift to others,” “loving,” “worthy,” and so forth.

She took the eraser and erased the word “worthless,” but she realized that it was written so boldly, the word wouldn’t go away.

She took some white out and painted over the word “stupid,” but the word was so bold, the white out crumbled over it.

She took a black marker and colored intensely over the word “burden,” but the word illuminated right through.

The paper was smudged from the eraser, brittle from the white out, and thinned out from the markers ink.

There was no use in trying to fix the damage that had been done repetitively throughout the years. Now, it was more noticeable than ever before.

Through the feelings and beliefs of being worthless, stupid, and a burden to others — she chose to live life anyway.

She chose to live it by loving others, speaking life into others, and by being knowledgeable that she is also a pencil that writes on the souls of others as if white sheets of paper, or damaged sheets of paper as she was.

Sometimes we believe our value and purpose in life comes from the amount of money we make, the popularity we have, how perfect our life’s circumstances are, or the image of our physical being — when in reality it’s about what we write on the sheet of paper for ourselves and others that defines our value in this world.

Words dwell, words ripple, words shape the world 1 human at a time, and words give or take life — words are power; therefore, you are power.

I love the way this is described! It's too common for people to not get how what they say affects others (my parents are very guilty of it, without realizing)

  • This is such an amazing piece, Marysol! I think about things like this often, but you've put it so well into this!
