I've always been a productive person. I never procrastinate, and I'm always able to get my work done on time. But there was one thing holding me back from being even more productive: the fact that I would often waste time throughout the day checking Facebook or Twitter instead of working. After reading about this simple productivity hack online, however, my productivity has skyrocketed! Here's how it works:

Set aside a block of time to work.

The first step to getting more done is simply setting aside a block of time to work.

I've found that many people who struggle with procrastination or productivity issues have trouble doing this, but it's actually not as hard as you might think. Here are some tips for making sure your work time is as productive as possible:

  • Set aside a specific place to work (e.g., at home, at a coffee shop). If possible, try not to use multiple locations for your working sessions; it can be distracting and confusing if you're constantly moving around between places where you do different kinds of tasks and projects.
  • Make sure everything you need before starting (e.g., laptop charger). If there's something missing from this list, add it! It doesn't matter how "small" or insignificant something seems--it may become important later on in your session...and if it doesn't? No big deal--simply go back later when everything else has been taken care of first."

Work in 25-minute intervals.

You don't need to be a productivity expert to know that consistency is one of the most important factors in being productive. If you're working on something, it's best to work on it consistently and regularly instead of sporadically and erratically.

The reason for this is simple: by working in 25-minute intervals, you are able to focus on one task at a time for an extended period of time without distraction or procrastination getting in the way. This means that even if something else comes up during your allotted 25 minutes (and trust me--it will), there won't be much of an impact because you already dedicated yourself fully towards your current task when setting aside this time block.

Take a 5 minute break between each Pomodoro.

  • During your break, do something that isn't related to work at all. Go for a walk or have a snack. Don't check email or social media--you'll just be tempted to stay on your phone! In fact, turn off notifications so they won't interrupt you during this time (if you haven't already done so).
  • Think about how many Pomodoros it will take to complete the task at hand. If it's something big and daunting, like writing an essay or planning an event for work, set aside 2-3 Pomodoros per day until it's finished!

Use the remaining time for breaks and planning.

You can also use the remaining time for breaks and planning.

Planning is essential, but it doesn't have to be done during working hours. You can plan while working or during breaks. If you find yourself getting distracted by a task and losing focus on other things, take a break and go back to your list of tasks or project plan in order to prioritize what needs to get done next.

Focus on one task at a time.

If you're like me, then you are always juggling multiple projects at once. In fact, I'm writing this article while also working on my next book and planning my next podcast episode.

It's easy to get distracted when we try to do too many things at once--especially when they're all important tasks! But what if I told you that there was a simple trick that could help boost your productivity by 300%?

Here's how: Focus on one task at a time. Don't multitask! If someone interrupts your work flow with an email or phone call, write down the task(s) that were most important before being interrupted so that when they return from their break (or whatever), they can pick up where they left off without having forgotten what needs doing next.

Make sure you have everything you need before starting.

As a general rule, if you're not sure that you have everything you need before starting a project, don't start it.

It doesn't matter how well-intentioned or well-prepared you are; if the tools aren't there and the information isn't complete, then it's just going to get in the way of getting things done. The same goes for support--if someone isn't on board with what needs to be done (or is only half-commited), then there will be friction between them and any progress made by anyone else involved in their work.

This simple technique can help you work more productively, but only if used consistently.

  • Time blocking is a good way to stay focused.
  • The Pomodoro Technique is a good way to stay focused.
  • A to-do list is a good way to stay focused.
  • Prioritizing your tasks is also an effective strategy for staying productive and not getting distracted by unimportant things like social media or cat videos on YouTube (which are actually quite important).

And finally: Delegating tasks that don't need your attention can help you focus on the ones that do!

Conclusion

I know, it sounds like a lot of work. But once you get into the habit of using this technique, it will become second nature and you won't even have to think about it anymore. The best part is that when you're able to focus on one task at a time without distractions or interruptions, your productivity levels will skyrocket!
