The worst day ever

Or sho he thought

By JabriPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

It was Sunday morning and Craig's alarm and his phone were ringing at the same time. Startled by all the sudden noise Craigs jumps up out of his sleep and scurries to his phone. Shuffling through the mess all over his bedroom he frantically searches for his phone. “A call this early on a Sunday morning, has to be important,” Says Craig. As he gets near the couch he can hear the vibration buzzing from under the couch. Realizing the phone is under the couch he rushes toward the couch stubbing his toe on the coffee table, he kneels down, grabs the phone and answers it immediately! “Hello” “ouch”! Screams Craig, on his way up he bumps his head on the coffee table. “Hi Dave, how may I help you this morning”. “Well Craig I’m sorry to be the one to tell you but we’ve got to let you go. Your performance has gone down this quarter and the company is moving in a different direction”. In total shock and complete pain Craig was completely blindsided by losing his job. “Who loses their job on a Sunday morning?” Craig asked himself. Craig heads over to the freezer to grab some frozen veggie for his bruised head and throbbing toe. Only to find absolutely nothing in his refrigerator. Craig lays his bruised forehead against the fridge and ponders on what just happened. He’s only been awake for 5 minutes and his world has been turned upside down.

Craig was a single 35-year-old bachelor with no dating life living paycheck to paycheck. He had no idea what to do next. He had no family, hardly any real friends and his daily routine consisted of working 10 plus hours and coming home to shower and prepare for work the next day. “Well I still have to get to the football game” Craig enjoyed going to football games on Sundays. It gave him something to look forward to being that he didn’t really have a life outside of work. Craig hops in the shower wondering how he’s going to hide the bruise on his head from everyone at the game. He turns the shower knob and nothing comes out. Completely confused, and unsure why his water isn’t working he ignores it and he decides he’ll get dressed without showering. “What a morning this has been,” he said. He loves to take a walk through the park on his way to the games each Sunday, he is especially looking forward to it this morning after stubbing his toe, bumping his head, getting fired, and realizing his water was cut off because he didn’t make enough money to provide for himself. Craig was never a dreamer, but during his walks through the park, he would sometimes wonder what else life has to offer. Work and home were all he knew. He never made enough money to comfortably take care of himself but he was simple, he could do without the luxuries of running water and working lights sometimes. Nothing ever really got under Craig's skin until today. During his walk in the park, Craig spoke out loud to himself, “I hope going to this game relieves some stress. Craig expressed himself that morning as if he were talking to the best friend he never had. He expressed that he was willing to accept life as he knew it if this is all there is to life. He expressed his frustration with the way his morning started. He said he had no idea what was next for him. Craig likes walking through the park but he definitely doesn’t want to live there. Right when Craig started to feel better, the rain started to fall. There he was in the middle of the park, with no umbrella on his way to the football game. Craig’s frustration built up so much he was holding back tears. The first time he decided to really take a step back and analyze his life, the first time he thought things were going to change because expressing himself the way he did got him motivated, it started to rain. “This isn’t the kind of shower I was expecting”. Hearing the church bells ring let Craig know the game was starting, he runs the rest of the way to the game, soaking wet, mudding shoes, and a bruised forehead. Craigs walks into the stadium questioning why he is even there. He wants to turn around and go home but all eyes were already on him because of his rough appearance.

He sits next to a guy in an all-black suit and a tall top hat. He says hello, but the guy does not respond. Craig shrugs his shoulder and sits back quietly. Focused on the game Craid is starting to forget about the rough morning until a little boy says “mommy he’s all wet”. Craig slips down into his seat, wishing he never came, wishing he never woke up, wondering why he is even alive. The man with the top hat next to Craig looks at him with a stern scary look on his face. Craig was embarrassed by his appearance so he tried to explain to the guy what happened to him that morning. The guy just turned the other way and pointed his nose up. “Sheesh,” says Craig. The game is over and it’s time to leave, the man sitting next to Craig leaves behind a little black book. Craig tries to get the guy's attention to give him the book but he just keeps walking. He called out for the guy but he just looked back and kept going. “Man what is with this guy?” He said. He followed him out of the stadium and watched him get into a cab.

Craig gets home and throws his belongings on the coffee table along with the little black book. With his mind all over the place and unsure what to do with himself on a Sunday afternoon, he grabs the books and tries to find an address to return it. Hoping to find an address so that he can return the book just to fill in the rest of the day, Craig finds something else. He finds on the first page it says “to whoever finds this book” Confused Craig flips to the next page and it reads “ today is your lucky day. The person who finds this book has found a fortune. You have just inherited 200 million dollars.” Dumbfounded and confused Craig flips to the next page hoping it's true. A check falls out of the book written for 200 Million dollars. The page that the check fell out of says "Don't spend it all in one place”.
