The Unexpected Money
A fiction story originally written for Little Black Book contest.
It was the beginning of summer in Crozet, Virgina. Crozet was one of those small towns no ones ever heard of and everyone who lives there knows everyone. Just like most small towns there won't be much to do. You could go for a hike at the park or to the library and on Saturday nights you could go roller skating at the community center. During summer the pool was open and of course there were a few ponds or lakes to go fishing in but otherwise there won't be much to do unless you wanted to ride the backroads or stay home to do whatever.
Amy Gentry had just graduated high school and moved to this small town so she would be close to the college she was going to attend come fall. Her mom had bought her a cabin that was at the top of a mountain and while she had neighbors, it sure didn’t look like there were any for miles. The cabin was old and small but it was cozy and peaceful. Finally on her own and away from all the people who used to bully her. Sitting in her bed she thought back to lunches at school where she was constantly picked on that was until three months before graduation that is. She laughed as she thought about all the students' faces when she had finally decided to stand up for herself. She had finally had enough and looked dead in the bully Hannah’s face and said “DILLIGAF'' Everyone looked at her with complete curiosity and surprise as Hannah replied “Oh look the nerd has actually said something, too bad what you're saying sounds like three year old beginning to learn to talk. What are you doing making up words? I assure you with a world like that you’ll never get anywhere but maybe to a old shack where you belong.” Hannah started laughing harder and drew back her fist but before she knew it Amy hit her in the face as she was saying “Does It Look Like I Give A Fuck?” Amy smiled and walked away, leaving Hannah standing in shock with blood coming out her nose.
After that day no one messed with Amy anymore. People moved out of her way as she walked the halls and would even open the door for her. A few people asked her to eat lunch with them but she would kindly decline their offers and go on about her day.
Finally she no longer had to deal with those people and she could do whatever she wanted without anyone around to judge her. It was a hot outside already and she had cleaning to do. That was one thing that made her different from others her age, she couldn’t stand a mess and everything had to be just so. Amy started on the living room and just as she had begun to mop she realized a board that was loose. She ignored it for the moment and finished mopping. After she was done she sat down to watch the history channel. Some documentaries were on about the early 1900’s and how people lived back then compared to now. Suddenly something even more interesting than it was already was said on the T.V. ‘Old timers would make a false floor to hide liquor and other valuables especially during the prohibition’
As Amy sat there her curiosity about the loose floorboard grew. She got up, went to get a crowbar from the back of the car. Before she knew it she was tearing the floor up in her house. At first she saw nothing and was just about to give up when she caught a glimpse of an old box. She pulled the old box out and opened it. Inside were pictures and a little black book. She opened the book and inside directions to several different places. The only thing that was written by each place was numbers with a dollar sign. One spot said $50,000 beside it, another said $500,000, the next spot had @25,000 written by it. She sat there wondering what it all meant. It was getting late and she decided to go to bed so that she could figure out the meaning of the book tomorrow.
The very next morning she woke up quite early and the first thing she saw was that little black book. She got up, went to make coffee and something to eat. After she was done eating she decided to study the book more closely. The directions seemed to start at the very house she was living in. With nothing else planned for the day, she got dressed, packed up a bookbag and set off for an adventure.
Amy hiked up through the woods and over a river when she finally got to a tree that looked like a heart. This was the first spot at least that's what the book said. She continued to look around but didn’t see anything that looked like $50,000. She opened the book and reread over it when she realized there were even stranger directions written under the location. After thinking about it for a moment she decided she would try to do exactly what the directions said.
She walked up to the tree and started feeling for a rope or chain. After five minutes of feeling up a tree and finding nothing she was ready to give up. Lifting her hand up and off the tree, she looked through the heart and saw what looked like an old chain on the tree behind it. She walked over to the chain and pulled on it as hard as she could. The ground opened up beside the tree and revealed an old trunk. Excitement and fear ran throughout her body. A combination lock was on the trunk with disappointment she began to think about what the code could be. She then remembered that by each spot there was a different date. She used the date putting it into the combination lock when she pulled down on the lock she was surprised that it even opened. As she removed the lid she held her breath and closed her eyes, terrified of finding a dead body, she slowly opened her eyes back up and to her surprise there were about 100 mason jars, each full of money.
Amy ran as fast as she could back home to get her car, luckily the path there was just wide enough to get the jeep through. She put all the mason jars in the back of the jeep. When she got to the bottom of the trunk she found an envelope. Slowly she opened it and took out the papers. Another map was there and a letter:
Amy couldn’t believe what she was reading. She was excited for the next adventure but first she needed to call her mom and get some rest. Her mom thought she was crazy and didn’t believe her until the following weekend when she came to visit. Finally, Amy was able to go to school with no worries and she was going to be able to open the hotel she had always wanted to. She followed the map to the next location and found the rest of the money.
After she graduated college she moved to the beach and bought the land she needed for her resort. Finally she had the people there building the hotel and everything was going like she had dreamed. Sitting there she thought one last time of high school and smiled as she realized what she told them came true. On her last day of school, Amy told all the other students “One day I’m going to be somebody. One day I’m going to be rich and when I am I will help those in need. I will make sure others aren’t treated like you all have treated me most of all. I am going to make my dreams come true. All you haters can keep hating but when it does happen you better not ask me for a thing.”
THE END!
