The Cognitive Functions

Descriptions of each function

By Alex RPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The Cognitive functions are used by the MBTI community and understanding these functions can help in understanding how to type and understand the MBTI types in general. I will explore how each function works in a description and how the users may present.

The introverted functions are linear, focused and analytical, while the extroverted functions are creative, spontaneous and informative. The feeling functions may be more artistic while thinking may be more technical, though these are mainly generalizations.

Introverted feeling seeks to analyse emotions, internal states. In contrast, extroverted feeling performs emotions. Introverted feeling is sometimes reserved yet it's users are not always reserved or introverted. Introverted feeling is intensely emotional and artistic and its users are often seen as artists in some sense. The function can be very artistic and reflective and users often have a very artistic side.

Introverted sensing wants to collect data and is very focused on orderliness. Extroverted sensing in contrast is very spontaneous and wants to create synesthetically . These users are often highly organised and good at collecting and keeping things in order. They also may have strong service skill as Si wants to be of service to others. These users are known for being highly organised and having a strong sense of organization to the point of at times seeming OCD. Introverted sensing wants to collect information and store or organize it in an orderly way.

Introverted intuition wants to collect and interpret information. It works by collecting data and analysing the meaning behind what is collected. It works with symbolism, meaning and interpretation so is quite artistic in this way. Yet it works with the collection and analysis of knowledge, as INFJ and INTJ can be seen as scholars and information collectors who have great analytical skills. The function is very good at interpreting symbolism and understanding mean in a linear fashion.

Introverted thinking works with logistics and solving pieces of a puzzle. It is linear and analyzes technical information in a linear fashion, and these users may be talented problem solvers and good at finding technical solutions. It is a highly analytical function and these users may also be very inventive technically, seeking to solve math and science problems and engineer new technical information.

Extroverted feeling is a function that acts out emotions and seeks to be of service to others. Extroverted feeling adapts to the emotions of others as is chamelonic and adaptive. Extroverted feeling may seem more superficial in the way they act emotions, and emotions may seem fleeting or to appear or disappear. Extroverted feeling users are interested in serving others and are often seen in a helping position.

Extroverted sensing is creative in a kinesthetic way. People who use extroverted sensing tend to physical exercise and they also tend to be creative in the way of something like painting or music. Extroverted sensing is inclined to spontaneous kinesthetic expression and physical expression. Extroverted sensing is highly spontaneous and is prone to creative expression in a kinesthetic way.

Extroverted thinking is informative and extroverted thinking users may be teachers in some sense. Extroverted thinking works out logistic in a less linear way to introverted thinking yet these users are very organized and logical. Extroverted thinking is highly logical and seeks to teach logic to other people, so people with this function in first position may often be seen around others.

Extroverted intuition involves planning and creating future scenarios. Extroverted intuition users may be good at writing or at creating stories where they can imagine made up or fictional scenarios. Extroverted intuition users are good at imagining new scenarios. erted functions seek to analyse, criticize, receive information and work in a linear fashion. The extroverted functions work in a more creative way, seeking to create, act spontaneously and work cohesively or togetherly. The introverted functions are critical and reserved while the extroverted function are more harmonzing or peacekeeping.
